DAMAK, July 12 - A high-level United Nations High
Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) official, told a gathering of Bhutanese
refugee leaders that their problem was a political one created by their
king, and arriving at a solution was much more difficult than anticipated.
"The Bhutanese refugee problem has become more complex
to resolve compared to other refugee problems in other parts of the world
as the king himself was involved in the eviction," said Dr Bhampa Rai,
refugee leader, quoting Abraham Abraham, UNHCR resident representative,
on Tuesday. "Since the king of Bhutan had evicted you all on political
grounds, it has become very difficult to resolve your problem," Dr Rai
further quoted Abraham as saying at the meeting.
The refugees, on their part, demanded that the UNHCR
should make concerted efforts to initiate talks with the king of Bhutan
at the interaction. "It now rests with our guardian - UNHCR - to create
an environment for dialogue with the king. If that happens, the solution
is within reach," Dr Rai added.
Refugee delegates from different camps lauded Abraham
for his sharp criticism of Bhutan for labeling the refugees as "terrorists".
