"Here we just come Kiotoshi , Let us show our Suwa Spirit"    'Kiyari-song'

The 1st of Harumiya is now going down with sand smoke. The huge log which is
over 3meters wide, putting  youngsters on it plunged to the bottom with speed.

Kiotoshisaka,    People are going down the steep slope holding their rope tight .

The 3rd of Akimiya went down . Youngsters on the wood were very brave and well to ride

Students of Okaya Junior High School performed "Shinano no kuni" on Kiotoshisaka
from where you can have all the scenery of Tokawa riverside.
.

The 1st of Akimiya The biggest log made its great performance, taking time, and solemnity.

They celebrate their success and sing Kiyari-Song just before falling down the Kiotoshi-saka

It was after sunset when The 2nd of Akimiya  slid from the mountain. It was almost 7p.m.
that the huge log was pulled up and reached to the end of slope .

Kiotoshisaka of Shimosha is settled at the entrance of Hagikura area.
It is in Shimosuwa-cho along to the Rote142. It is very near to Ochiai-Power
Station which had given electricity to Suwa area in Meiji era. Kiotoshisaka is a
mountain 32 meter high, with angle of 35 degree , and 100 meter long. Now it
is famous all over Japan reported by TV news and by other media.  I tried to
touch the ground myself and could understand how the slope is slippery and
muddy. The grinding huge log weighted more than 6 or 7 tons !      Please
imagine how it is dangerous and needs brave heart!  It is said many were died.
Kiyari-song says ,  "It's the Man's trial."   Nobody can find from when this
custom had begun.  There is not any photograph showing men riding on the
logs before 1938.  On the other hand, there is a report that a brave man was
on in Taisho era.(1920)         Now TV shows all the event all over Japan, that
encourages Japanese Man's inner bravery.  Many visitors for Suwa may hope to
try their courage and skill to ride on the huge Onbashira.  From Kanto, Kansai,
and Nagoya district people come from outside of Suwa are called Yosomono.
They want to ride on the sacred column without any religious heart.
They are only attackers for local residents. Suwa Shrine and the worshippers
are warning about such outlaws. Shimosha Yamadashi finished at 9p.m. on
April 11. 1st of Akimiya finished its parade reaching to Shimekake, 1 kilometer
    underneath Kiotoshisaka.
Shimosha Yamadashi Festival continued 3 days, counting total 523,000
persons. To compare with the last event, 37,000 larger people visited this
time. It is the most successful in the history of Onbashra.
