1986年、カリフォルニア州サンタバーバラで結成。
当時グレン・フィリップス(vo.)は弱冠15歳だったとか。
1989年、『Bread and Circus』でメジャーデビュー、
「次のR.E.M.はコイツらだ！」的な注目を集める。
3rdアルバム『Fear』からのシングル
"All I Want""Walk on the Ocean"が
ビルボードチャートを駆け上がり、ついにブレイクを果たす。
そして、彼ら渾身の最高傑作『Dulcinea』をリリースするが、
R.E.M.級のヒットとはならず、その後も伸び悩みが続いた。
1998年、ついにバンドは力尽きて解散。
解散後、グレン・フィリップスはソロとして地道な活動をスタート、
サンタバーバラ近辺の若手ロックバンドのレコーディングに
参加することもしばしば。
その他のメンバーもLapdogなどのバンドを細々と続けている模様。
Toad自体も、一日だけの再結成を行ったりしているらしい。
Toadは、危うげで切なげで繊細なロックを奏でる。
その繊細さがアダとなり、ビッグバンドにはなれなかったが
この8枚のアルバムに収められた音楽が残る限り、
彼らの素晴らしさが色褪せることはない。
各自のこれからのソロ活動に期待したい。 |
