シアトルがオルタナティブ・ロックのメッカとなる少し前。
Green River〜Temple of the Dogとして活動していた
Jeff Ament(b.)、Stone Gossard(g.)は、Mike McReady(g.)と
Eddie Vedder(vo.)を迎え入れて、新バンドPearl Jamを結成。
1stアルバム『Ten』は、Nirvanaの『Nevermind』と並んで
90年代初期の代表的なアルバムとなった。
『Ten』では少し抑え気味だった、彼ら特有の
生々しいアメリカン・ロック魂が現れてきたのが2nd『Vs.』から、
そしてプロデューサーである
Brendan O'Brienとの出会いからであった。
カート・コバーンの死により、ドップリと落ち込んだせいか
『Vitalogy』『No Code』あたりの曲は暗く重苦しいムードが
漂っていたが、（Neil Youngと行動を共にしていたのもこの頃）
『Binaural』あたりからは吹っ切れてきた様子。
2000年、バンドは世界ツアーに出るとともに、
全ライブの音源をそのままCD化→ファンクラブ経由で販売
という、とんでもない暴挙に出た。
これは海賊盤対策なのであるが、その数は100枚以上にのぼる。
演奏曲目が毎回違い、ライブに自信のある彼らならではの暴挙。
（2002-2003年のライブでも同様のリリースが行われている。）
ファンとしてはうれしい悲鳴をあげるしかない。
2003年には2度目の来日も果たし、全公演ちゃんとCD化されている。
売れる・売れないにかかわらず、ファンを大事にし
自分たちの音楽を大事にする彼らの誠実さは、
すばらしいの一言に尽きる。 |
