1967年生まれ。
父親は、'60-'70年代に活躍したシンガーソングライターである
ティム・バックリィだが、ジェフ本人はほとんど父のことを知らずに
暮らしてきた。（ティムは28歳で死亡）
1991年、ティム・バックリィのトリビュートコンサートに
ジェフが飛び入り参加したことがきっかけとなり、
その才能が知れ渡るようになる。
小さなライブハウスやカフェで歌いながら、
1994年、27歳で本格デビュー。
おおげさではなく「神様の声ってこんな声かもね？」と思わせる
艶やかな歌声と表現力がすさまじく、また、音楽のカテゴリーを
完全に超越して、どんな曲でも歌いこなしてしまう姿は
マジで人間離れしていた。そんな感じで、世界中のライブ会場で
度肝を抜いていたんじゃないかと思う。1995年に来日。
その後、2ndアルバムに向けて何度もレコーディングを
繰り返していた矢先、1997年5月29日、スタジオ近くの川で
泳いでいたジェフは行方不明となり、そのまま帰らぬ人となった。
30歳だった。
純粋なオリジナルアルバムは『Grace』一枚だけとなってしまったが、
亡くなったあとも、生前の未発表音源がリリースされ
改めて彼の底知れない才能の一端を見せつけられ続けている。 |
