Hidankyo representative distributed the following letter to all the delegates of States parties at the NPT Preparatory Committee in April 2002.

April 8, 2002

Honorable Secretary General of the United Nations Mr. Kofi Annan,
Mr. Chairman, and Distinguished Delegates

As the survivors of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and on behalf of 300,000 survivors as well as the deceased, we convey our earnest and sincere hope to you.

As you all know, nuclear weapons are the most dreadful and inhumane weapons ever created by human beings. They are the tools of the Devil, the weapons that can exterminate the entire human race. We cannot wait even one more day for the abolishment of such weapons. We, the survivors, simply cannot understand why these horrendous things still exist on this earth, though everybody must be aware of the danger.

The recently announced plan called the "Nuclear Posture Review" by US President Bush and his government is a perilous one, which can push the entire human race to the verge of extinction. To put it simply, this is sheer madness. This plan is nothing but a plan of the Devil, which we should stop by any means.

Honorable Secretary General, Mr. Chairman and the Distinguished Delegates, please make every effort and put pressure to President Bush and the US government to give up their plan. Please do make use of us for that purpose. We will go anywhere in order to attest to our experiences of the hell caused by nuclear weapons. Please make strong demands for the implementation of the “unequivocal undertaking” ensured in the May 2000 NPT Review Conference. Please, never allow anyone to topple over the heap of fruits that has been built up during this past half the century - the fruit of all of our efforts to free the world from the nuclear nightmare.

In this NPT Preparatory Committee Meeting, please reconfirm the outcome of the previous Review Conference and make a giant and solid step toward the abolition of nuclear weapons. Please show your wisdom.

With our sincere respect

Sunao Tsuboi, Co-chairperson,
Senji Yamaguchi, Co-chairperson,
Nori Tohei, Co-chairperson
Terumi Tanaka, Secretary General
