IF-THEN METHOD - international version - [page 11]
REPRESENTATION IN VECTOR SPACE
The results of the distribution of the social motive components obtained from a single subject or
from the group data can be located in the form of a vector in some space which is constructed by using
a technique called the "vector representation method". Of course, an analysis using this technique is
not necessary when the "IF-THEN method" is used. However, the results indicated by this technique can
be effective for investigating relationships among properties based upon the social motives detected
in various psychological situations.
In this method, the vector space consists of three axes X, Y, and Z, which are orthogonal with each
other. It is assumed that the length of each axis is 1.0. The form of the space constructed using
these three axes is a hemisphere with a radius having the value of 1.0 as its length, as shown in Fig-
ure 9. The X axis (abscissa) and the Y axis (ordinate) refer to the player's own gain and the other's
gain, respectively. The Z axis (vertical against the X-Y plain) corresponds to "equalitarianism" (D0).
More concretely, the vector on the X axis indicates the size of the ratio of the motive component for
"individualism" (A+) involved in the subject's response tendency, which takes a value toward the right
(positive direction) along the axis from the central point (i. e., the intersection with the Y axis).
Alternately, "masochism' (A-) takes a value toward the left (negative direction). Similarly, the axis
Y indicates the ratio of the components for "altruism"(B+) along the positive direction (toward the
back of the figure) and "aggression" (B-) along the negative direction (toward the front of the figure)
If the ratio of the motive component of "individualism" (A+) for a subject is 100 %, the vector
having a length of 1.0 is located in the positive direction of the X axis. When the motive component
is "masochism" (A-), the vector is reversely located in the negative direction of the abscissa. If the
detected motive components are only "altruism" (B+), the vector having a length of 1.0 is located in
the positive direction along the back positive side of the ordinate. If the motive components are only
"cooperation" (S+), the vector having a length of 1.0 is a line an inclination of 45o to the abscissa.
