Christ is born! 11.Adester fideles St. John's Collegeは1933年にCommunity of the Ressurection(キリストの復活協会）の提唱によって創設されたそうで、その設立経緯から、合唱団（聖歌隊）も宗教曲に特化したものだそう。また、指揮者のIverson氏は合唱団創設当時からとのこと（合唱団と学校の創設が同時期かは不明）。このアルバムでは、A面の最初の3曲は合唱団のOBによる男声合唱で、以降はこのOBたちと、本来の少年合唱との共演で行われる。曲目といいい荘厳な響きといい、まるで60年代当時ののイギリスの聖歌隊（ウィルコックスさんのキングスカレッジ）を聞いているような感じがする。技術はもちろんがあるが、巧さをみせつけるのでなく、祈りが篭っている気がするのである。アレンジも美しい。強いて違いをあげるなら、低音がロシア正教歌のようにひときわ重々しく響くことぐらいだろう。ボーイソプラノは主としてB面で活躍する。全て合唱。ゆっくりしたペースで歌われるNinna-nanna(子守歌）が柔らかくて優しい。ゆっくりめのThe World's Desireや男声の低音合唱で朗々と歌われるO Mortal Man、同じく男声だけで歌われるA Merry Christmas(We wish you a Merry Christmas)、清澄なボーイソプラノがちょっと切なく美しいSweet was the song the Virgin sangなど、決して派手ではないが、じんわりと聞きどころたくさんである。 (by Emu) 2006/02/09(Thursday)up |
