6.Green Park

Deckchairs in Green Park. Maybe, you canft see them so clearly.
Ifll talk about them later on this page.

Many years ago, when I flipped through some pages of "GIO GLOBE TROTTER"*1, I found an article, "A word of Caution about using the deckchairs in Green Park!" There are many deckchairs throughout Green Park. However, you should be cautious. Soon after you sit on one of them , somebody will come and ask you for a fee. In the article, such kind of things were mentioned. Since that time, I've never forgotten the story about the deckchairs. I'm not sure whether it was because of this or not, but since then, I'd rarely entered Green Park although I often went to Piccadilly Circus which is near Green Park.
During one of my trips, I acutually caught a cold which is rare for me. On that trip, I traveled alone for most of the time. I thought that I didn't have a fever, but I often coughed and felt really tired. Sometimes, I felt nausea. I consumed medicine which I had brought from Japan quickly, so I bought some medicine for a cold at Boots and took it. My condition continued for a few days. Normally, I should have been in bed, but my mind was clear and I felt that I wanted to go out because I was in England. At that time, I went to Piccadilly Circus, my favourite place. However, I felt drained. I found a hot dog shop. It reminded me that I hadn't had lunch. I wasn't hungry at all, but I bought one. I nibbled at it and then felt sick. Finally, I didn't eat so much and threw it away. "Ah, I'm tired!" It was then that I saw the famous(?) deckchairs.
"I know I have to pay if I use one of them, but I want to." I sat down. Soon after that, a person in charge came to ask me for 70 pence*2. "I see. That story happens to me."
Actually, it wasn't so comfortablesitting in the chair, so I left there in less than 5 minutes.
Since then, I'd never entered Green Park.

*1 "GIO GLOBE TROTTER" is a series of Japanese books which talks about travelling in each country all over the wolrd. There is a lot of valuable information which is written by many of it's readers.
*2 In 2003, the deckchair fee was one pound fifty pence per every four hours.

On my thirteenth trip to England, when I wondered where I should visit in London, I found out that Spencer House was near to Green Park. It has some relationship to late Princess Diana. "I had visited Green Park only a few times, so visiting Spencer House and Green Park sounds good."
Thus, I decided to go.
The scenery of Green Park from Spencer House was truely beautiful. I could see many large trees. After a guided tour of Spencer House, we walked towards Green Park passing through a small old path which the guide had told us about. We could see some trees while walking along the path.
"Actually viewing Green Park is extremely relaxing--it's quite beautiful." My impression of Green Park changed completely.
After a few days, I walked from Westminster Abbey to Bukingham Palace through St. James Park. From there, I entered Green Park. Then, I went to Piccadilly Circus. It was a comfortable Autumn day. I enjoyed walking in the park while seeing green or a slightly coloured trees.
Green Park has a rough atmosphere because there are many big trees. I like Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens better than Green Park. However, it may be wonderful that there are so many green trees close to Piccadilly Circus, where many brand shops, restautant and some department stores are located.
