Trip to Scotland
in the summer of 2000

the 4th day

The 4th day
Scotland is very large. Before travelling, when I was considering which parts of Scotland I should visit apart form Edinburgh, the pictures I saw of Glencoe in a guidebook charmed me the most. They were photographs of moors. I could imagine the feeling of clear and cool air when I saw the pictures. Therefore, I thought that Glencoe was the No.1 place to visit ; and in reality, when I visited Scotland, Glencoe was very special.

Fort William--Glencoe-(A82)-Glencoe-(A82)-(Crianlarich)|(A85)-Lochearnhead

The breakfast which we had at the B&B in Fort William.
You can see the black pudding on the right.
"If you don't like the black pudding, you don't need to eat it", the proprietor of the B&B said. "Oh, not at all. This pudding is very tasty!"

After having a delicious and nourishing breakfast at the B&B, we drove to Glencoe. Glencoe is a very small town. We couldn't find even a tourist information centre. Actually, we passed through Glencoe at first, then turned back to the town. Finally, we found the visitor centre and got out of the car. There were green hills all around. The water in the loch was so clear that it reflected the scenery. We were fascinated with this image@@

Lochearnhead|(A84)-Stirling Castle-(A905, M9)-(Polmont)

We left Glencoe at around 11:30. After that, although we had driven the car for an hour, almost all the things which we could see were simply lush green hills. There didn't seem to be any restaurants in the area. When we entered a shop which we found at last, they said, "No food!" However, they told us that there was a place which we could eat something 7 miles away, so we drove again. The cafe was quite busy. We knew the reason why. As I already mentioned, it was difficult to find a place to eat in the neighborhood. Finally, we had lunch, BLT and soup.
We arrived at Stirling at 2 o'clock. Stirling Castle is quite a large castle. We drove there smoothly, so we had plenty of time. Therefore, we decided to see the castle although we hadn't planed to visit.
The admission fee was six pounds and we had to pay two pounds for parking. The castle looked magnificent, but after we entered it, we found out many rooms were under repair. We were a little disapponted. However, the castle and the grounds were very large, so I recommend you need about two hours to fully enjoy your visit.

(Polmont)|(A803)-Linlithgow Palace near Edinburgh

Our travel was during Obon which is an extremely busy time, so we couldn't book the return part of our ticket ; finally we got it just 1 week before the departure. We thought that it was impossible to find a B&B in Edinburgh because it was during the Edinburgh Festival and decided to stay in Linlithgow near Edinburgh. However, when we arrived there in the evening, we found out that our decision was wrong.
We couln't find a B&B easily. The B&B which we finally found after asking some people was a small place, so it was already full. Luckily, the proprietor of the B&B was so kind that they gave us some advice. "Did you come here by car? Therefore, you can get to Bo'ness in 30 minutes. I think there are more B&B in Bo'ness. If you go immediately, you'll be there before the tourist information center closes."
Fortunately, on the way to Bo'ness, we found a B&B in Linlithgow. We asked if a room was available and luckily, the answer was yes!! We had to share a bath and a toilet. However, we couldn't ask for too much. It cost around 14 per person. It was the cheapest place we stayed at.

After we found a B&B, we walked around the town of Linlithgow.
Linlithgow is near from Edinburgh, but it was a quiet town. We saw only a few travellers there.
