Kobushi Magnolia kobus being lifted and root-balled in October
2002.
This large tree was about 10 meters tall
and had a 1.5 meter root-ball.
The tree was going to Yokohama near Tokyo
The roots were soft and easily cut with our
tree spades but the branches were weak and
easily broken.
The
root-ball was cut about six months before
in preparation for this day in order for
the tree to develop a good root system.
On this day we recut the root-ball and excavated
the area around using a Komatsu 'yunbo'.
The root-ball was prepared for the asa nuno
'hessin'.Nawa 'twine' was used to bind the
asa nuno to the root-ball.
The nawa was bound tightly and hit into place
using a bat to firm the surface.
Once the tree was root bound we lowered over
onto the edge of the tree pit.
The leaves were stripped to reduce transpiration
which helps reduce water loss from the tree.
This helped to reduce stress on the tree
and increase the survival of the tree durin
transplanting.
The branches were bound for transport using
the nawa. The tree in completed for transport.
An important part of the day is maintenance.
Here a tree planting spade is being sharpened.
