ザ・シンガーズ・アンリミテッド

　アメリカのコーラスグループ「ザ・シンガーズ・アンリミテッド」は、1950年代に活躍したグループ「ハイ・ローズ」のメンバーだったジーン・ピュアリング(Gene Puering)がリーダーとなり、編曲とバリトン・パートを担当、同じく「ハイ・ローズ」のメンバーで、テナー・パートとサックスやフルートも演奏するドン・シェルトン(Don Shelton)に、ソプラノのボニー・ハーマン(Bonnie Herman)とベースのレン・ドレスラー(Len Dresslar)を加えて、1967年にシカゴで結成されました。
　彼らはドイツのMPSレーベルに1971年に最初の録音を行って以来、1980年までに15枚のアルバムを発表しています。ただ、1972年にリリースされた「CHRISTMAS」というアルバムだけは、MPSと契約する前に録音されています。
　彼らの録音の特徴は、マルチトラック・レコーディングで音を重ねることによって、4人とは思えない多彩なハーモニーを形成していることです。また、レコーディング・セッションも、レーベルのオーナーでエンジニアでもあるハンス・ゲオルク・ブリュナー・シュヴェア(Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer)がヴィリンゲンに持つスタジオで一貫して行われているのです。

今まで、個別にCD化されていたタイトルはありましたが、これでやっと全アルバムがCD化されました。Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer自身によるリマスターで、クオリティは確実にアップしています。これを聴くと、日本盤のCDのリマスターがどれだけいいかげんなものかがわかって、とても情けなくなります。録音の裏話などが収められたブックレットはファンには必須のアイテム。なんと、これにはテイク・シックスやマンハッタン・トランスファーのメンバーのインタヴューも有り、彼らが実際にこのグループから多大の影響を受けていたことがよくわかります。
