Hibakusha protest against the nuclear test by the DPRK and call on to reconvene the Six-Party talks immediately

The Democratic PeopleÕs Republic of Korea (DPRK, North Korea) announced on the morning of October 9th that it carried out an underground nuclear test.

We, Hibakusha (Atomic bomb survivors) who experienced the hell of the first nuclear war 61 years ago have continuously appealed to the world to eliminate nuclear weapons, noting that nuclear weapons are arms of evil aiming at extinction of human race. We, with strong outrage, denounce the DPRKÕs nuclear test.
According to the official news agency of the DPRK, there was no leak of radioactivity or danger from the test and would contribute to security in the North East Asia. However, the nuclear test only results in not contamination or environmental issue but declaration of possessing the arms which cannot coexist with humans. Tension in the North East Asia is now increasing.

No matter whatever the reason, Hibakusha cannot accept to use nuclear weapons as means for maintaining the nationÕs security. More than 20000 nuclear arms are said to be deployed for actual use on the earth and the possibility of the use is still remained. If nuclear weapons are used, not only humans but the entire planet will be wiped out.

We, Hibakusha protest against the nuclear test and request the DPRK, nuclear powers and the United Nations General Assembly;
1. The DPRK should abandon its nuclear weapon program immediately.
2. Reconvene the Six-Party talks promptly and launch to discuss the denuclearization of the North East Asia.
3. Nuclear powers including the US should implement in good faith the agreement to eliminate their nuclear arsenals in the 2000 NPT Review Conference.
4. The United Nations General Assembly should take effect the CTBT (Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty) and conclude an international treaty of elimination of nuclear weapons.
