Great three-dimensional designs in Japanese architecture

Traditionally in Japanese architecture we have pursued the aesthetic as a structure.
Now we can see great three-dimensional designs on some joints in pillar or beam and
eaves structure.
But these beautiful designs havenft been used for interior decoration.
It was designed for only some parts needed as a structure. That was so rational way of
developing design.

Even on this example Shoso-in, interior wall was plain and smooth.
