CORSAIRとはどんな意味なのだろう。ものぐさなので長い間調べもしなかったが、これを機会に辞書を引いてみる。沿岸地方を荒し回る回教徒の海賊(船)だという。

　なるほど艦上戦闘機にふさわしいネーミングだが、このF4Uには、それらしからぬ経歴がある。当時としては最大の2,000馬力級エンジンを搭載し、優れた上昇力を得るために直径4mの巨大プロペラを使用した。このプロペラのため脚が長くなることを嫌い、また胴体と主翼の干渉抵抗を波少するために独特の逆ガル型の主翼を導入、意欲的な設計だった。

　しかし着艦時の安定が悪く艦載機には不向きと判定され、海兵隊の陸上基地で使用されることになる。空母搭載が可能になったのは太平洋戦争も終盤になってから。

F4U CORSAIR

The prototype of the F4U Corsair had the biggest and most powerful engine, the largest propellel and probably the largest wing of any fighter in history.
In 1940 after almost being destroyed in a forced landing, the aircraft was rebuilt. A new model, which used an air-cooled engine, was the first fightel and the first American aircraft of any kind, to exceed 400 mph. Many Navy requirements were incorporated into the V-166 prototype tbat was first flown in May 1940, including internal cells in the wing for
small bombs and a fixed-gun armament comprising two 0.303-inch (7.7mm) Brownings above the engine and tw0 of 0.5-inch (12.7mm) caliber in the wings.
During 1941 the Corsair was redesigned. Despite an increase in weight,the F4U's overall performance was enhanced. Production started up again in late 19411 and over 9,440 F4U-1 aircraft were built, including the 1C and the 1D, which employed different armament or engine models. Corsairs were manufactured until December 1952, one of the longest runs of
any piston-engine American fighter.
