The number of combinations of the four tasks which could be selected from tasks corresponding to the effective 16 response patterns used in this test is 1, 820. However, it does not mean that all these combinations are effective for the detection of social motives. The number of effective combinations for detection is only 128 sets even if only the effective response patterns are used. In this test. all the effective 128 combinations are used as a tool for the detection. This means that the subject's responses are analyzed 128 times on the basis of the 128 effective combinations in this test. Essen- tially one social motive component is detected for each analysis. Thus, we can get 128 social motive components from a real subject's response series in either the pro series or the post series in this test. This is the fundamental process of the analysis. An example of the fundamental principle for detecting the social motive component is shown in the upper portion of Figure 5.
