I love beef. Moreover, I've been to England more than ten times. However,
I'd never had roast beef at a luxurious restaurant probably because I always
save money during my travelling in England.
Then, in 2003, I decided to eat some delicious roast beef when I travelled.
My friend and I wondered whether we should go to Simpsons or to Rules.
Then, in the morning of the day, my friend telephoned these two restaulant
to book a table. However, there was no availablity. "Ha ha ha. I think
so." Finally, we decided to go to Porters in Covent Garden and had
some ordinary roast beef.
In 2004, I planed to visit England with my parents who also like beef very
much. Therefore, I thought, "We should try some tasty roast beef at
an elegant restaurant when we finish our trip." Thinking that my friend
and I couldn't book a table on the day previous year, I thought I had better
reserve in advance.
Firstly, I thought Simpson was the best, but my mother said she didn't
want to visit a restaurant with a formal atmosphere. According to a guidebook,
a man should put on a tie in Simpsons. Moreover, Simpsons used to be in
Piccadilly Circus, but now they have moved. In other words, the restaurant
was new. On the other hand, I saw the HP of Rules, which my friend and
I couldn't book a table at as well as Simpsons in the previous year. The
atmosphere was wonderful. The HP said that Rules restaurant was the oldest
restaurant in London, which was established by Thomas Rule as a oyster
bar in 1798. Checking their memu, they had £14.95
* Light Supper Menu. The price was very reasonable! The HP said that we couldn't order the Light Supper Menu
before ten o'clock, but I thought they should have other reasonable course
menus. Therefore, I decided to book a table for us at Rules restaurant
and sent e-mail to them. The next day, I received their response. "Happy
to confirm your reservation for 3 people at 19:00."
Yeah! I'm ready!!
*According to the information which I gathered, in 2005, it cost £17.95.

The day came! We went to Covent Garden where Rules restaurant is located,
after we changed our clothes. We looked around a little, then went to Rules.
There were many people such as office workers, familes, friends, couples,
so the restaurant was very lively. A table at the inner part near the windows
was reserved for us.
I had thought that the menu on the Internet was different from the menu
at the restaurant. Therefore, I hadn't seen the details on the Internet.
Besides, I didn't bring a dictionary. When I opened the menu, I was a little
uoset because I didn't know many English words on the menu. Ha ha ha! However,
my father and mother didn't understand the menu, so they said they would
leave everything to me. I felt troubled, but I had to order for, so I began
to struggle with the menu.
At first, I chose a wine. When I checked the menu, I didn't find any other
course apart from Light Supper Menu. Light Supper Menu was probably made
for people who enjoyed seeing some plays. I ordered our dishes one by one
; I chose three pumpkin soups and tomato salada to share. However, I couldn't
choose the main dish. I wanted to order roast beef, but I couldn't find
it. "Roast Rib of Inverurie Beef, Yorkshire Pudding, Creamed Horseradish
& Spinach: for two (per person)" on the menu must be roast beef,
but we wanted to eat fillet. I gave up and asked a waiter where roast beef
was on the menu. He pointed at "Roast Rib of Inverurie Beef"
on the menu, as I had expected. I asked him, "Is there other roast
beef?", but he answered, "No." Therefore, I ordered the
roast beef for three. While we waited, we toasted. All of us thanked that
we were able to enjoy the trip in good health. Shortly, the tomato salada
was served. There were some peices of yellow tomato as well as red ones.
On the top. chopped onions and dressing were sprinkled. It looked very
bright and the taste was good. Next, pumpkin soup was served. It was also
tasty!
After coming back to our hotel, my mother said, "I saw somebody eating
a meat dish which looked like a hamburger steak. It seemed to be tasty.
Any meat dish was OK for me."
I said, "You shoulld have said so."
My mother wasn't satisfied with the roast beef, so after the trip, she
often complained, "I couldn't eat sufficient meat during my travelling
in English."
In short, if you want to eat roast beef, probably, you should go to Simpson's, not to Rules. According to my English teacher, John P, most hotels serve roast beef as one their dishes during Sunday lunch. He said, gSunday lunch's roast beef is excellent!h So, do you think I Should try next time?
However, The first mistake was that I went to Rules and ordered our meal without either any preparation or an English-Japanese dictionary. Ha ha ha!
