St. Ives
Hepworth Museum

The workshop of Hepworth

There are some small galleries in St. Ives. One of the most famous is Hepworth Museum which is under the control of the Tate Gallery.
After you enter and go up the stairs, you'll see some abstract objects which Barbara Hepworth made. Then, when you go to the garden, once again, you'll see her works here and there. It warmed my heart to take a walk in the garden and view her works.
In 1903, Barbara Hepworth was born in Wakefield. From 1920 to 1921, she studied at the Leeds School of Art. After that, she developed her skill at the Royal College of Art. In the 1930's, she became the central figure in the British Art scene and created a revolutionary new approach to European abstract sculpture.
During the Second World War, she evacuated to St. Ives and set up a studio . Since then, she continued to live there and created make many sculptures until she died in 1975.
I knew how she played an active part because she became a Dame Commander in 1965.
When I visited Hepworth Museum on my second occasion, Makiko, who travelled with me, said that she felt strong sympathy for her as if she were her reincarnation. I don't know if everybody will feel such sympathy. However, I think that this museum has something which atracts people in someway or another.
