　ゴーリーは、1953年から1960年まで、大手出版社であるダブルデイ社に勤務していました。 同時期、ジェイソン・エプスタインは、上質なペーパーバック・シリーズ「アンカー・ブックス」の刊行を開始し、ゴーリーをデザイナーの一人に起用しました。 ゴーリーは、表紙絵を描く他、タイポグラプィー（タイトル字のデザイン）や、本全体のデザインなど、様々な分野で活躍し、その後のデザイナーとしての基礎を身につけて行ったようです。
