Koba Evaluation: 8

This is the latest Steven Seagal's film. Since he is old enough, his movement was not so much impressive as before. However, he still looks his best and shows his presence throghout the film. Seven Seagal is a cop in the States and he is forced to be sent to various sections in lawenforcement officers' work because he is too violent and prefers acting alone without listening to his boss. He finally gets to a notorious police brank "15 th Station," where some conspiracy is taking place. The film, from the beginning to the end, is full of actions of every kind; cars, motorcycles, street fights, gun battles and others. In addition, the film is decorated with occassional sexual and offensive scenes with full vulgarism. I found a middle-aged woman and apparently her daughter in her 20s, who were sitting just behind me in one of the smallest theaters in Sapporo, leaving midway through the film, rather toward the end, possibly they had it or felt embarrassed. Anyway, if you like action films with some martial arts nature, you should not miss this film.

This film is a remake of the 1968's legendary work by Oliver Stone with the same title. The orifginal fim was aired on TV when I was still a child of 5 or 6. I remember the film was aired again and again, especially in new year's days. Over 30 years later, during which drastic changes have been seen in fiml-making techonology, the fim has come back. Compared to the old one, the new film was focused more on space traveling since that is the area where present computer graphics could be vitalized most effectively. I did not see any drastic improvements of makeup technology for apes' features. One of the few improved aspects of the makeup skills probably connsists in the richness of apes' facial expressions. That is, they looked more like humans. For those who have seen both of them will notice that the "wild" human beings can speak English just like apes on the planet. This is rather disappointing to me because that does weaken the apes' absolute advantages over human beings. In the old film, they humans were all described as a developing animal without language. Thus, it made us fell really threatened. The new film, however, describes humans too good to be enslaved by the apes. Lastly, I was really amazed and laughed by the last scene. In the old film, an astronaut was astonished by the destroyed Statue of Liberty in New York City that he found on his way to unknown destinations. He got really shocked to learn that the planet was the earth. In the new film, an astronaut successfully leaf the planet and landed on the earth. He made a soft landing in the water before the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. He had expected to see the famous marble statue of President Lincoln sitting on the huge chair before he got into the temple. Then, what did he see there? Guess what? Check it out at a theater near you!!!

This is one of the most nationalistic films I have ever seen. The film was directed by Michael Bay, who directed "Armaggedon." So, they have a lot in common. However, one of the major defects of the film is its inaccurate desriptions of Japanese military personnel and the sets they appear in.The triangle relation involving two servicemen and a pretty nurse dominates the whole story while the bombardment by zero fighters their suffering American crew members play a rather secondly role. The film can thuse be termed a "romance in war."

This film was amazing. No one would expect any character played by Robert De Niro to be killed and gone in the middle of a film. I was totally unable to expect how the story would end. Actually, I even had expected the cop would survive or the whole story was made up just to surprise the audience at the very last moment. But he was really dead.

I saw this film in Shinjuku while I was enojoying my holidays in Tokyo. I was lucky enough to find the theater on a moview day in Tokyo, which comes on 2nd of a month. As you kow, the movie got several Academiy awards this year. I was fully convinced of the awards by its completeness as a film in terms of active use of photo effects including old-style shooting angles and its complicated but simply composed transitions of the plot. The film describes one of the American's most urgent problem: drug. I am sure you will be fond of the film.

Koba Evaluation: 9

This could be one of the most well-made war film ever created. It is based on a true story about a heroic sniper who shot dozens of the Nazis officials in the battle of Leningrad during the Second World War. I was intrigued by the initial scene of a battle where thousands of Russian young men were sent by train. Only half of those forced to join the battle had guns. Those without guns had to wait for gun holders to die. They were not allowed to retreat; those who attempted were all shot by their troops. I see Russian commanders were not really skilled in battle fields. This is how so many Russian soldiers, over 20 millions, were killed in the war. This film will also include a love story of the sniper and his girl friend. Fortunately, the couple survived.

Koba Evaluation: 8

This film may scare you to death, or at least deprive your appetitie, especially meat like internal organs of animals at a yakiniku restaurant. I saw the prequel of "The Silence of the Lambs" at a theater in Waikiki when I graduated and went to the University of Hawai'i. I sitll remember vividly the face of Dr. Lecter. So, Since I happened to see the preview of this sequel at a theater in Sapporo last year, I had been so much excited and looked forward to see this film. Although I found some of the scenary transitions were not so smooth and sometimes put me bored, the last scene was satisfactory enough to evaluate this firm with a "8" at least. Some may be intrigued by his strength and presence of mind; he was always calm and accute in his action. He made all his killings art and actually produced mastepieces to his heart content. No other actors than Anthony Hopkins could play the role of the psycho killer. Maybe BBB could act as one of the victims if Hanniubal comes to Japan to seek a new excitement in the following sequel with a possible title, "Hannibal in the East."

It was an amazing story in the sense I was not able to tell what would happen after a scene. As any audience can tell quite easily from the atmosphere and its camera works, the film was directed by the same one who directed "The Sixth Sense." This film can be then called its sequel. Actually, I found this film more interesting and I got threby more attracted by each scene, especially by the last shocking scene that would not be predicted by any ordinary people. I was so amazed by the last scene since I can mostly tell how a story will come to end. I would definitely recommend you see the film at once!!!

Stallone looks so cool in this film. Maybe he acts the best in his whole career. It is simply the story of revenge. He acts as a man who collects unpaid money and he calls himself "financial adjuster" when he mentions his professionto his niece. His bout with Mickey Rourke, who also acted a boxer once, was so real. Besides, this film contains a lot of Koba expressions. I recommend you see this film!!!

User Comments: Weak, mediocre attempt at sci-fi.

Val Kilmer / Carrie-Anne Moss

Koba Evaluation: 7

The film shows no clear plot that attract audience at all. Since there are several films dealing with Red Planet or Mars in recent years, I see no eye-catching scenes, which were actually shot in Jorden desert. Yet, some of the special effects used in the film look attractive. I do not really recommend that you see the film. The only advantage you gain from this film is many Koba book expressions are used and you can brush up those expressions with contexts. That's it.

THE SIXTH DAY (2000)

Date: Sunday, January 14, 2001

Theater: Teikokuza Kaikan (Tanukikoji 1)

translated by KIKUCHI Hiroshi

Directed by Roger Spottiswoode

Genre: Action / Sci-Fi / Thriller

Plot Outline: Futuristic action about a man who meets a clone of himself and stumbles into a grand conspiracy about clones taking over the world.

User Rating: 6.3/10 (1586 votes)

Cast overview: Arnold Schwarzenegger / Michael Rapaport / Tony Goldwyn /Michael Rooker

Koba Evaluation: 6.5

I was quite disappointed at this film. The film deals with cloning in the near future. Although the story is based on some scientific truth and thus makes itself rather complicated, I still had a lot of difficulties understanding the whole story. What is worse is the way the film is editted. Some scenes changed into the totally unrelated with quite unsuccessful sound effects. Besides, many of the remarks do not make any sense or sound totally fake. I am sorry to have seen this film as my first film for this year.
