荘厳寺は志賀島にある臨済宗のお寺です。

荘嚴寺の歴史（The history of syougonji）

蓮台山荘厳寺は、鎌倉時代の弘安元年（1278）に聖一国師（円爾）が開いたと伝える臨済宗東福寺派の寺院で、延命地蔵菩薩像を本尊としてお祀りしています。境内のある志賀島は、国宝金印「漢委奴国王」の出土に象徴されるように対外交渉の要地であり、古代から中世にかけては中国に渡った多くの名僧が足跡を残しました。
嘉禎元年（1235）に宋の仏鑑禅師（無準師範）に学んだ聖一国師もその一人で、貝原益軒の『筑前国続風土記』には、国師が志賀島を訪れた際に志賀海神社の別当吉祥寺の宗岳が弟子となったことから吉祥寺も禅宗寺院に転じたと記されています。
荘厳寺の創建については詳しい記録が伝わりませんが、江戸時代には吉祥寺と同じ博多承天寺の配下に属し、志賀島の住民の檀那寺として尊崇されました。また、明治初年の神仏分離で廃絶した吉祥寺の旧仏や什物を今日も護り続けています。

Kichijoji, has been venerated as Dan'nadera of residents of Shikanoshima.

treasure of Kichijoji that abolition in the gods and Buddha separation
of the early Meiji Period.

荘厳寺では聖一国師が中国・宋の五台山より請来したと伝える文殊菩薩像をお祀りしています。志賀島の文殊は室町時代の禅僧や京都の公家の記録にも見え、丹後・天橋立の文殊と並び称されるほど有名であったようです。
現在、毎年二月には智慧の文殊にあやかって学問成就を祈る「文殊まつり」を執り行っています。
2005年 福岡県西方沖地震にて被災した時に修復をした。仏像の頭部から、元禄時代（1688年～1704年）に修復したという記録が見つかる

もとは境内観音堂の本尊で、現在は本堂に安置しています。平安時代前期に制作された量感豊かな一木造りの像で、九州独特の様式を備えています。福岡市の指定文化財です。

Yakushi-Twelve Heavenly Generals statue

鎌倉時代末期に制作された寄木造りの像で、眷属の十二神将像が付属しています。頭髪の形は京都・清凉寺の釈迦如来像を模しています。
In the parquet of the image that has been produced in the Kamakura period last stage, it comes with Twelve Heavenly Generals image of Kin. Hair of the form is to imitate the Shakanyorai image of Kyoto Seiryō-ji.
