Introduction

My life has always been around tennis. For over a decade, week to week I play tournaments, circling the globe with one focus: winning on the court. Luckily, I have been able to achieve this goal (most of the time), and, quite honestly, when I look back on my accomplishments I simply can't believe it. All the seat, the tears, the vomiting... And sure, I've won Wimbledon six times (whatever) and I have been number one in the world six years in a row (so what?).

But do you want to know what really stands out for me? The most poignant part of my career? My "Outtakes" interview with Dan Patrick in ESPN The Magazine.

Why?

Because when I'm on Center Court at Wimbledon, fighting for my life, to whom do I look for inspiration? I'll give you a hint. He's on center stage himself. He does Coors commercials (Who's his agent?). Yes, I think about what Dan would do if he were in this situation -- when he's sitting there at the console, lights beaming on the top of his head, the clock ticking and the commercial is ending. That's the kind of pressure I could never take. He's da man. You know. When he's en fuego.

Now, I'm not going to lie. Interviewing is not my favorite part of being a professional athlete. Week after week, year after year, it's the same questions and the same stories. But I actually look forward to talking to Dan because he cuts below the surface. He's interested in what's beyond the outer layer. And he's funny. An interviewer can either bring out the real person or they can be lazy and regurgitate (no pun intended) the same old boring (again, no pun) stuff that's out there. The result can't help but be a bet dull. I do between 80 and 100 interviews a year, and believe me, if every interviewer had the talent and personality that Dan has, I'd be the most interesting man on the planet!

So enjoy these "Outtakes." You'll see what I mean.
