Q and A 1996

Q What aspect of your game do you like the most?

A There are things I feel I can do better, but I feel as if I have gotten some options on what I want to do, if I want to stay back or come in. It's more or less an all court game, but I am best known for my serve.

Q You've said winning a Grand Slam it is the greatest feeling in the world, how do you compare it to winning any other title?

A Well, it's different. I mean, I basically measure my year on how I do at the major tournaments and the more that I have won over the years, the more I want to win. So it's nice to win events on the APT Tour, but when you have won a Wimbledon or US Open you really feel as if you are making some history.

You can not do anything bigger in the game than winning majors, and so that's why I put a lot of pressure on myself. I put a lot of emphasis on my year. How I do at the major tournaments and if I had a year that I did not win a major, it would be very disappointing. Like for instance this year, I had yet to win one until the US Open and when I won it, it kind of saved it.

Q So how would you say you have done this year?

A Well, it's been. Up to the US Open everyone was talking how bad it's been, it was more disappointing to me. I felt I did well at the French considering my coach passing away. Wimbledon was the biggest disappoint, losing to Krajicek in the quarters. I went to the US Open feeling pretty good, this was my last chance to win a major and I got a little bit lucky.

I mean the match with Corretja is one I will always remember, because of the crowd and how I was feeling. I just kind of hung in there and squeaked it out somehow and played a good final against Chang.

I'm still kind of riding the waves. It's awesome when you win a major. There is nothing else in the game you could do, maybe win all four in a row, but that's pretty tough to do so I have no complaints about the year.

Q What about next year; What are your chances of winning all four?

A Well, I don't know, my goal each year is to try to win one and if I do, it's a good year, if I win two it's a great year. Four in a row with tennis being so tough and difficult to stay on top, I'm not ruling it out but it's something that's very tough to do.

Clay is not my best surface, you have to win the French to do it and it's a big hurdle. So I'm not saying I can't do it, but things, really have to come into place and we will see.
