June 1997 Pete on Wimbledon |
Paris was a good indication of the depth of the men's game and how difficult it is to win a major. Gustavo Kuerten played some great tennis and beat some extremely difficult opponents, which is a good indication of the level of play these days. It's also a good opportunity to harp on the talent level, which is a positive way to look at it -- not what happened to me, Boris, Andre, Michael and the rest!!! So, now it's time to turn the page! A new week, a new opportunity and time to get ready for the biggest tournament in the world -- Wimbledon! I'll start my preparation at Queens this week then have a practice week and off to Wimby! My preparation for grass is a little different. By that I mean that, with short points, the emphasis is on serve and return. That's one reason I'm playing doubles this week. I want to sharpen the serve & volley game as well as to work on the "target" returns necessary for good grass-court tennis. ... So hopefully this week I'll get a lot of matches in, chase another title and get my grass court game in gear. I look forward to Wimbledon as always, and it's terrific to return to a place where I've had some good results in the past. Wish me luck!!!! |
