April 1997 First Quarter of the Season |
With the first quarter of the year finished, it's time to get ready for the clay-court season. Although I was supposed to finish up the first part of the year in Asia on hard-courts, I was unable to go due to a wrist injury. An enjoyable part of life on the circuit, is that each part of the calendar year, you have to do your schedule in order to prepare for the up-coming majors. Given that the Grand Slams and the ATP TOURS' Super 9 surfaces change, you as a player must adapt and prepare according to the next "stage" of events. Since my next Grand Slam event is the French Open and major Tour events will be the Italian Open & World Team Cup, I have started to emphasize my physical training for the longer points and to get acclimated to sliding. As my wrist progresses I will try and do more clay-court related court drills as well (if my wrist permits, there is a chance I would also play the ATP Super 9 in Monte Carlo.) The terrific thing about our year long tour is that each week we play, is another opportunity to compete and try and achieve another goal. I always keep this in mind because no matter how lofty my goals are, it's important to emphasize the major events, but in reality, each week is another chance to do what I love to do; compete and play tennis! |
