to Make a Film
on the ex-Korean BC Class
War Criminals
We are trying to produce a documentary movie on the Korean BC class criminals.
The producer is Kim Shi-u, who has studied film in a Japanese university
for seven years and is now teaching at the Art Institute of Seoul. All of
the staffs, including those who are in the commercial movie industry, are
volunteers.
In Japan, the ex-Korean BC class war criminals have been ignored. In Korea
they have been misunderstood as collaborators of Japanese. They themselves
feel guilty. They say, "Whatever the circumstances were, we were definitely
part of the imperial Japanese forces" and "There were other Koreans
who fought against the Japanese. We were simply foolish." In fear of
being considered apologists, they have been unable to deal with the misunderstandings.
The reason why we decided to organize a photo exhibit in Korea was to help
resolve misunderstandings. The exhibit was quite successful. A lot of viewers
gave us positive feedbacks such as "I did not know the issue"
and "I thought they were collaborators of the Japanese." We felt
that if there was a small opportunity we would be able to communicate.
It is great to see a birth of new consciousness from the post-war Korean
generation. We, members of the support group, have also worked hard to make
sense out of the history. We want to accomplish the feat of making the movie
together. Collaboration of three groups, Japanese, Koreans living in Japan
and Koreans, will bring positive results.
Our biggest concern is money. In Korea, the history of documentary filming
is very short and it is extremely hard to find a sponsor. Unlike Japanese
non-governmental organizations, the Korean counter parts are not used to
making documentary films. In this past May, we founded the "Society
to make a film on the Korean BC class war criminals." We asked the
members of the "support group" to participate in our movie making.
Our new group is going strong.
