Journey
Hanover

The home town of William, Caroline and their brothers and a sister. It was the capital of the Electorate of Hanover, which was one of the states of the Holy Roman Empire, until the establishment of the German Empire in 1818.

Hanover have had close relation with England. At the time of Herschels, they formed an alliance under the same sovereign (House of Hanover, England, 1714-1837). Not only Herschels, but G F Haendel, a composer, and many other people also moved from Hanover to England.

Caroline went back to her hometown after William's death, and spent the rest of her long life until she died at 94 years old in 1848. There are Herschel Street and Caroline Street named after them.

Caroline was buried in Garten Kirche, a church in centre of the town, but her grave is now in silence and few people visit there.

The right map shows the location of Caroline's grave in the cemetory of Garten Kirche.
