The Herschel Society of Japan, established in Tokyo in 1984, is a group sharing interests in astronomy through studies on various academic achievements of an
astronomer in 18-19th century, William Herschel, who is known as a discoverer of the
 planet Uranus, and his family.
William Herschel had started his carrier as a musician before his astronomical achievements such as discovery of the planet Uranus and observation of nebulae and
clusters. His son, John Herschel stayed in Cape Town, South Africa to complete lists of
astronomical objects in southern skies which can not be observed in the Northern
hemisphere. Caroline, William's younger sister, is also well known as a pioneer of woman
 astronomers.
