The Defensores seniores is listed as one of the pseudocomitatenses units under the Magister Peditum and assigned to the Magister Equitum's Gallic command. Their shield pattern is shown in various manuscripts as below:

It would appear that these are the same men as formerly commanded by the Praefectus numeri defensorum, at Barboniaco, under the Dux Britanniarum; see under his entry for details. A "Defensores iuniores" is also assigned to the Magister Equitum's Gallic command; it is likely the same unit as formerly commanded by the Praefectus militum defensorum, at Confluentibus, under the Dux Mogontiacensis. Its shield pattern is not recorded in the Notitia.
