Structure of woodpecker's head

1.tongue
2.hyoid
3.root

1.
The tongue divides into two.

2.
It through the right of hole of the nasal bone.

To eat the insect that exists in the tree, the woodpecker has a tongue very long in which it can insert it also in a thin space. This tongue is a mysterious structure.

The tongue and the hyoid have the skull once around.

The tongue is connected with the hyoid in the interior of the throat, and on this hyoid, it turns to the head after it divides into two of the necks and the cervical vertebrae is placed, it becomes one again, it turns round the parietal region, it returns to the throat through the hole of the nasal bone, and the applying root there.

This long hyoid expands, shrinks, and a long tongue is put in and out.

The saliva of the sticky material twines in the state of the brush, and the insect can be absorbed the tongue ahead.

The structure for the hyoid to surround the skull plays an important role of becoming a buffer material that distributes the impact when the woodpecker pierces the tree at high speed, and preventing the concussion of the brain.
