Examples of the modern architectures
I have some examples of modern architecture
which traditional two-dimensional
elements were applied to.
NOU THEATRE <PHOTO 71>
This is kind of general example to applying
traditional element to contemporary building.
This is entrance hall of NOU theatre, built in (1990)nineteen- nineties. Nou is a traditional
play like a KABUKI.
SMALL HOUSE <PHOTO 72>
This is a trial housing in 1952. It preserves aspects of traditional Japanese
design while
incorporating elements of western planning. The house is approximately eighteen
inches wide,
the interior is one large room two stories high with a balcony at the rear.

MODERN HOUSE <PHOTO from Magazine>
This is one very modern house. They have good combination of 2D and 3D design,
and warm
atmosphere.
VENTURI <PHOTO 73-78>
American Architect "Rovert Venturi & Dennis Scot Brawn" had had
one huge project in Japan.
It is a Recreation Resort, completed in 1997.
Venturi studied hard about the Japanese
typical elements. And He picked up the elements he had
strong impression as Japanese style. And made them into panel, and adopted them
to the atrium
-big hall way- as a main design element.
But for Japanese people it looks strange
and was not comfortable space.
The elements he chose were not remarkable
things for us.
I think he should focus more on the emotional,
essential part of Japanese architectural elements
instead of the object itself. For example, material feelings, it's warm
atmosphere, taking in natural
light softly and so on.
