| B: | This is the scan of the holodeck just before we lost contact with Chakotay and Tuvok. The readings are pretty garbled. But I'm still inclined to think there's malfunction in the holodeck's matter-conversion nodes. |
| Ja: | Photonic energy leaking into the subsystems could certainly damaged the nodes. And it might've created the defect in the program that occures and Grendel shows up. |
| B: | A defect that dematerialized that people... |
| Pa: | I'm not willing to accept the fact that Harry and the others are gone for good. The molecular patterns might still be there. And if there are, we might be able to rematerialize them. The only thing we can do is go back into the holodeck, study this energy surge, find out what exactly happened. |
| B: | Anyone who goes back in might happen(?) just like the others. |
| Pa: | Maybe not anyone. |
| Do: | Me? |
| Pa: | A hologram cann't be converted into energy. It already is energy. It's a perfect choice. |
| Do: | How do you intend to transfer me out of sick bay? |
| Ja: | We'll have to modified your data stream protocol's imaging systems. The fact you're going to the holodeck simplify things. The projection systems are already in place there. |
| B: | And we're going to give you complete control of your magnetic containment field. You'll be able to make yourself solid or let matter pass through you at will. |
| Ja: | Nothing on the holodeck will be able to touch you unless you wanted to. |
| Do: | I see. |
| Ja: | Think of this as your first away mission, Doctor. I can understnad your hesitation. But there are three lives at stake. And you have the best chance than anyone on this ship to save them. Do you understand that? |
| Do: | Yes. |
| Ja: | Good. Your job is to find that photonic energy surge and scan it closely. We need all the data we can get. You have to interract with the characters in the holonovel. So make sure you are familiar with the Beowulf story. Your circuit modications will be finished in three hours. |
| Do: | Yes, Captain. Computer, access full text of ancient Earth epic of Beowulf including the historical annotation and cultural refferences. |
| Co: | Data compilation in progress. |
| Ke: | Doctor? |
| Do: | Oh, Kes. Come in. I don't know how long I'll be gone. But my absence is no reason to suspend your studies. How are you doing with protein synthesis text? |
| Ke: | I finished it yesterday. |
| Do: | Good. And you may start learning how to operate base-pair sequencer. You'll find a manual in the technical data base. Is there something else? |
| Ke: | Is there something bothering you? |
| Do: | Not at all. And excuse me, I have a great deal preparation to do. |
| Ke: | You're nervous about this mission, aren't you? |
| Do: | Nervous? I can perform emergency surgery without getting nervous. I can make life or death decisions about patients without getting nervous. I'm setting(?) unnervous. |
| Ke: | Those things are familiar to you. You've been programmed to do them, but this is different, isn't it? |
| Do: | I can describe every detail of every piece of equipment in this sick bay from a biobed to neuro-stimulator. But I've never even seen the sky or forest. Let alone vikings and monsters. I can't afford to fail, but I don't know what to expect in that holodeck. |
| Ke: | You've been telling me that you deserve to be treated like a member of the crew. Oh, here is your chance. And I can tell you that none of the crew knows exactly what to expect when they're gone on away mission. Doctor, have you chosen any(?) name for yourself yet? |
| Do: | I have narrowed the list to three possibilities. |
| Ke: | Then let me suggest to choose one before you go. It might help you feel more like a starfleet officer. |
| Do: | Um. Maybe you're right. I'll give it some thought. And Kes, thank you. |
| Ke: | Good luck. |
