２月例会報告でご紹介の書籍「The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk」の著者そして編集者のHugh Shields氏からメールへの返信が有りました。　二つ質問を致しておりましたのでその回答を紹介します。　原文とグーグル翻訳です。　質問は、表紙カパーの色「トレーナー・イエロー」の決定者についてと、サブタイトルの「THE POOR MAN’S SPITFIRE」の“いわれ”についてです。　　そして本書の購入の動機は製作途中のDH.82の次の予定の機体であることを申し添えました。
Most happy to hear the book arrived and you are pleased with the result. As for the color of the book in trainer yellow, that was my decision as publisher. The term ‘Poor Man’s Spitfire’ was a phrase coined many years ago. RAF Spitfire pilots who flew the Chipmunk for RAF evaluation said it flew ‘just like a Spitfire, but without an engine’, a humorous reference to the difference in horsepower between aircraft, the Spitfire at +1200hp versus a Chipmunk at 150hp. As for the reference to ‘poor’, if you couldn’t afford a Spitfire, an inexpensive alternative was a Chipmunk. A point of interest, on the back cover is a photo of my aircraft 18011 in flight. I took the photograph in the chase plane, my son was flying the Chipmunk on a beautiful summer evening, one of my favourite photos. Other photo is the two of us departing the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa a number of years ago and the cockpit panels in my aircraft. As you are doing a Tiger Moth, I included two images I secured from the corporate library of DeHavilland Canada. Hope your project is a success and would be interested in seeing when finished.
