Annual report of William Herschel Society for 2002

Francis J Ring

This year 2002 has been an active year for local members of the Society. We are sorry that many of our friends who live away from Bath, and those abroad cannot join us at these meetings. The monthly meetings held at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution has provided a variety of very interesting topics. During the year, the Museum had opportunities to make some valuable additions to the collection. A long case clock made in Bath in the late 18th - early 19th century was purchased. The same dealer who sold the clock also had an 18th century stick barometer, made in Bath by J Abraham. The same maker was found in a record in the city archives to be "Optician to the Duke of Wellington". We have also this year opened a website for the Society. The address is www.williamherschel.org.uk.

We are pleased also to announce that Dr Allan Chapman of Wadham College Oxford has kindly consented to become an Honorary Vice President. He has given a number of public lectures in Bath and across the country as a whole, and very recently was involved in a television documentary for the tercentenary of Robert Hooke. At last year's AGM we welcomed Mr John Hallworth to the Committee. Unfortunately for the Society, John has moved away from Bath to West Wales, so matters are now in the hands of Mr Fred Schlesinger, our membership secretary. Mr Seiji Kimura from Tokyo and Mr John Herschel Shorland kindly consented to become corresponding members to out committee. We are very appreciative of the fact that Mr Kimura has made the visit to Bath several times in the past year, and has been present at two committee meetings. We express our particular gratitude to Dick Phillips, who has been largely responsible with Rodney Hillier for the local group meetings and also for the production of The Speculum. We hope that in time, there will be some practical help for the journal production, and ask you all to bear with us until these issues are resolved.

As a Society we are now 25 years old, and a number of the earlier members are no longer with us. Please do help us to keep the Society active by the addition of new members. Last year saw the retirement of Mrs Mary Brown, manager at the Museum. Mary has been an enormous help to the Society and undertook many tasks for us. Mr and Mrs Ron Baker have now taken over the Museum from Mary, and we hope that any member calling at the Museum will make themselves known, if they have not done so.
