Journey
Bath

Bath is located in southern England, at 150km in almost due west from London. It is a traditional health resort that the upper class people in 18th century loved and still keeps the rich elegance of the old times. It is famous for its hot springs known since the Roman era. It is said that the English word "bath" has its origin in the name of this city.

The organ of the Octagon Chapel (not existing now)

William Herschel had lived there for 16 years since he hired for an organist of Octagon Chapel in 1766. During the period he got to dedicate himself to astronomy and gained fame for his discovery of Uranus.

The residence at No 19 New King Street where William and his sister Caroline had lived is open to public as the Herschel House (open during 14:00-17:00 in March-October, Saturday and Sunday only in November-February). The annual general meeting of William Herschel Society (UK) is held in this city in March every year. Members of Herschel Society of Japan go to Bath to attend the meeting, too.

The picture in right is well-known Royal Crescent, the beautiful arched building. Buildings on streets were redeveloped with Bath stone, the limestone quarried in Bath. Bath, a forerunner of city planning had an effect on London for its circuses, streetlamps and so on.

There is a sightseeing information site: A Guide to the City of Bath (http://www.cityofbath.co.uk/index.html).
