マルコポーロは、1271年に父親と叔父と共にアジアに向けて出発し、24年にわたってアジア中を旅しました。
Marco
Polo (1254-1324) departed for Asia with his father and uncle in 1271, and
traveled throughout Asia for 24 years.
After
returning to Venice, he was taken prisoner in the war with Genoa, and dictate
the story of his journey of Central Asia and China to a prisoner companion.
This
story later became “Tōhō-kenbun-roku 東方見聞録 The Travels of
Marco Polo”.
Although he did not travel to Japan by himself, he introduced Japan to
Europe under the name of “Zipangu (Cipangu)” for the first time with the
legend of “The country with gold mine”.
This
legend is thought to be derived from the fact that there was “Konjiki-dō 金色堂 Golden-hall” at “Chūson-ji 中尊寺 Temple” in “Ōshū
Hiraizumi 奥州平泉”.
“Chūson-ji
Temple” is an architecture of “Jōdo-kyō
In 2011,
it was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
And It
was gold that the dowry of “Kentōshi 遣唐使 Japanese envoy to
the Tang Dynasty” and payment of the Japanese side of “Nisshō-bōeki 日宋貿易 Japan-China (The Sung Dynasty) Trade”.
Europeans
were interested in an isolated Japanese island in the Far East.
16世紀以降、鯨油は主にヨーロッパで照明に使用されていました。
From the
16th century, whale oil was mainly used for lighting in Europe.
アメリカの捕鯨船は、1820年代に豊富な資源を求めて日本の近くの海にやって来ました。
American
whaling vessels came to the waters near Japan in search of abundant resources
in the 1820s.
「万次郎(1827-1898)」は「土佐中ノ浜村」の漁師でした。
“Manjirō
万次郎 (1827-1898)” was a fisher man at “Tosa-Nakanohama 土佐中ノ浜村”.
「太平洋」で遭難の後、彼は1841年に「鳥島」の米国の捕鯨船に救助されました。
After
distress at “Taiheiyo 太平洋 Pacific ocean”, he was rescued by a US
whaling ship on “Tori-shima 鳥島 Island” in 1841.
彼はホイットフィールド船長と共にマサチューセッツ州フェアヘイブンに行き、そこで船長の養子になりました。
He went
to Fairhaven, Massachusetts with Captain Whitfield, and there he adopted by
Captain Whitfield.
「江戸時代」、「侍」以外の庶民は苗字を持つことができなかったため、「万次郎」も苗字がありませんでした。
Because,
common people except “Samurai” could not have a last name in “Edo-jidai Period”,
“Manjirō” also had no last name.
He
called himself "John Mung" in the United States.
California
Gold Rush started in 1848 and continued until 1855.
彼は1850年に帰国することを決め、カリフォルニアの金鉱山で働いてお金を貯めて、1851年に「琉球王国(沖縄)」に戻りました。
He
decided to return home in 1850, saved money by working at gold mines in
California, and returned to “Ryūkyū-Ōkoku 琉球王国(沖縄) Kingdom (Okinawa)”
in 1851.
彼は、「薩摩藩」、「長崎」の「幕府」、「土佐藩」で尋問を受けれ、米国について報告しました。
He was interrogated by “Satsuma-han 薩摩藩 Clan”, ”Bakufu 幕府 Shogunate” in “Nagasaki 長崎” and “Tosa-han 土佐藩 Clan” and he reported about U.S.
He proved that he was not a Christian, at last he was able to come back
to home in 1852.
1853年にペリーが日本に来航した後、「幕府」は、米国大統領からの手紙にうまく対処するために、万次郎を江戸に招待しました。
After
arrival of Perry in 1853, “Bakufu Shogunate” invited Manjiro to Edo for coping
well with the letter from U.S. president.
「万次郎」は、「幕臣」となり、苗字を付けることを許され、故郷の「中ノ浜村」に因んで「中浜」としました。
“Manjirō”
became a “Bakushin 幕臣 Samurai of Bakufu” and was allowed to
put his last name, and “Nakahama 中浜” was named after
his hometown “Nakanohama-mura 中ノ浜村 Village”.
1860年、彼は日米通商条約の批准書を交換する使節団のメンバーとして「咸臨丸船」でアメリカに行きました。
In 1860,
he went the United States at “Kanrin-maru 咸臨丸 Ship” as a member
of the missions to exchange ratification documents of the Japan-US Commerce
Treaty.
そして、彼はホイットフィールド船長と再会しました。
And he
reunited with Captain Whitfield.
その後、彼は英語の通訳と教師として働きました。
After
that, he worked as an English interpreter and teacher.
彼の墓は「雑司ヶ谷霊園」にあります。
His
grave is in “Zōshigaya-Reien 雑司ヶ谷霊園 Cemetery”.
The
descendants of “Nakahama Manjirō 中浜万次郎” in Japan
continue to interact with the descendants of Captain Whitfield in the United
States.
In 1987,
“Tosashimizu 土佐清水市 City” has signed sister city
agreements with New Bedford and Fairhaven, where they had stayed in the United
States.

inventor James Watt improved the steam engine.

Around
the end of the 18th century, steamboats were invented, and European countries
began to move into distant East Asian countries.
And they
began to look once again at the isolated Japanese islands.
First
the Russians and then the British tried to unlock the door to trade and
commerce.
But the
country which turned the key was the United States.
U.S. “Hogei-sen
捕鯨船 Whaling vessels” and China-bound clipper ships frequented Japanese
waters and the Americans wanted safe ports for provisioning.
China
was accede to foreign demands of Western powers for more open access by the
Opium War.
“Bakufu
ペリー提督は1852年11月24日、アメリカのノーホークを出発しました。
On
November 24, 1852, Commodore Perry departed from North Hawk in the United
States.
そして、大西洋を渡り、アフリカ大陸南端のケープタウン、インド洋、シンガポール、香港、上海を経由して、1853年5月26日に「琉球王国(沖縄)」へやって来ました。
He
crossed the Atlantic Ocean and arrived at the “Ryūkyū-Ōkoku 琉球王国(沖縄) Kingdom (Okinawa)” on May 26, 1853 via Cape Town at the southern
tip of the African continent, Indian Ocean, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

At this

そして、1853年7月8日に4せきの軍艦を率いて「浦賀」沖に到着して停泊しました。
On July
8, 1853, he led a 4 cough warship and arrived off the coast of “Uraga 浦賀” and anchored.
7月14日、久里浜に上陸して合衆国大統領の親書や信任状など渡しました。
On July
14, he landed on “Kurihama 久里浜” and handed over
the letter and credentials of the President of the United States.
ペリー提督は、来春の再訪までに提案に伴う問題が解決されていることを希望する手紙を残して浦賀を出航しました。
Commodore
Perry left “Uraga”, leaving a letter that hopes that the problem with the
proposal will be resolved by revisiting next spring.
From
this arrival of Perry, “Bakumatsu 幕末 The Last days of
Tokugawa Shogunate”, started.
In “Kyōka
狂歌 Poem” of “Taihei No Nemuri Wo Samasu Jokisen Tatta Shi Hai De Yoru
Mo Nemurezu 泰平の眠りを覚ます上喜撰たつた四杯で夜も眠れず”, only four cups
of “Jōkisen上喜撰 Green tea” means only four “Jōkisen 蒸気船 Steam ship (Kurobune 黒船 Black ships)”.
So, this
“Kyōka” means that Japanese can’t sleep at peaceful night by only four “Jōkisen
蒸気船 Steam ship”.
“Jōkisen
“Hai 杯” is a ordinal number that counts not only cups and glasses, but
also counts ships.
1854(嘉永7)年、ペリーは7隻の軍艦を率いて再び来航して「江戸湾」へ入りました。
On February 11, 1854, Admiral Perry led the warship and returned again
and entered “Edo-wan 江戸湾 Bay”.
「横浜」で「日米和親条約」が結ばれ、「下田」と「函館」の2港が開港しました。
And “Nichi-bei-washin-jōyaku
横浜での会談の間に、「力士」による「相撲」の披露や、汽車の模型の運転、有線電信機による通信、贈り物の交換などが行われました。
During
the meeting at Yokohama, a “Sumō 相撲 Sumo wrestling by “Rikishi
力士 Sumo wrestlers”, driving of train models, communication with wired
telegraphs, and exchange of gifts were held.
