Heitaro's Night Swim[a picture book

I dedicate this book to the people of Kumomi,
the people who live there all year long,
and make their living by catching fish.
They are full of wonderfully surprising things in their life,
but are surprised at nothing.
I am surprised and hope this surprise will find itself in the text.

On a hot August day Heitaro had just turned eleven when he mad a discovery.

He stopped a minute at the top to look out at the great round belly of the seadd

But something strange was happening.

There was a big family of them on some further rocksdd

He thought that he had seen enough of the strange water animals to tell his big brotherdd

He didn't much like the idea of running into dangerdd

Heitaro got tired of chasing things arounddd

One big rock rising from the sea floor protected the little cavedd

After seeing all this great tangle of fish, he decided that this was enough for one nightdd

The morning star was just rising out of the waterdd

At the top of the pass he stopped to turn around and look back.
