Everlasting Reality
|
|
Reality is beginningless, endless, unchanging and eternal. What is an unchanging, unborn, and immortal reality? The only thing that comes to mind is space. In everyday life, space is like air, and we cannot confirm its existence. In order to confirm its existence, we need something to confirm it. For example, take a cup. We use the cup as a cup, but what we are actually using is space. To utilize that space, we need a cup. Space is real, but the cup is merely a means to confirm and use space. It's just there to check and utilize the space. The same is true of buildings. Living space is created with walls and a roof. We think of ourselves as using a building such as the walls, the roof, or the exterior but actually we are using space. The walls, roof and exterior are visible but they are just there for appearance and are not actually used. What we are using is the real, living space. The walls, roof, and exterior are merely means to confirm and use that reality. We exist in this world with the body and mind, but like a cup, the body and mind are not real. It only exists temporarily and will surely disappear someday. The existence of space can be confirmed and utilized by something visible like a cup. Just as the cup allowed us to confirm this, what is this space that our body and mind allow us to confirm? Just as the space created by a cup is used to pour a drink, how is the space that our body and mind allow us to perceive used? Isn't the space that is confirmed by the body and mind this world? Our existence can be confirmed in this world precisely because we have the body and mind, can't it? Don't our body and mind exist in order to confirm and utilize the space of this world, in other words, in order to live in it. If that is the case, then we can say that we are born into this world in order to bring it into existence and to live in it. To live is to utilize the space of this world, whose existence we confirm with our body and mind. That means it should be called "activity." Just as a cup exists to confirm and utilize the inconceivable reality of space, "activity" exists to confirm this world and find its meaning. The meaning of life in this world varies from person to person; it could be pushing the limits of the body, pursuing beauty, exploring the unknown, or creating something. What we need to keep in mind is that if we live consciously, everyone can find meaning in life, even if no one knows it. If you can't think that way, it's probably because you are trapped by societal values and are judging the meanings of this world that you find to be superior or inferior. It's not what you do, but how you do it that matters. The space of this world is real, but the body and mind only exist temporarily. They are merely a means to confirm the existence of this world. In our daily lives, we think of our self as our body and mind, but the body and mind are tools for confirming and utilizing reality; they are not ourselves. Our true essence, which should be real, is the space called this world. The body and mind are merely tools, so what is important is to know what they are for, rather than getting hung up on their continued existence. If the space that we can perceive with our body and mind is our true essence, then everything in this world is us, which means this world exists within us. We believe that our body and mind are us, and we assume without question that there is a world called this world, and that we exist within it; however, in reality, the opposite is true; the world exists within us. This is the solipsistic experience itself.
