Aerial view of the Friday Mosque of Isfahan, seen from the north
(From Henri Stierlin, Architecture de l'Islam, 1979, Office du Livfre)
Except around the Four-Iwan type courtyard, the mosque has almost no
external appearance (facades), enclosed by surrounding townscape,
partly because of many conversions and enlargements.
This shows well the Islamic architecture's character that emphasizes to
enclose its interior spaces and the courtyard than to display its exterior
as the 'enclosing architecture' or the 'membranous architecture'.

In the foreground on the left is the South Dome (1072-1092) over the Mihrab
and in the background on the right is the North Dome (Gombad-e Khaki, 1088).
The courtyard only has esthetic composition
and one cannot see the external appearance of the mosque.
