INTREPID adventurer Ikumasa Tsuchiya from Japan has earned the right to put his feet up. Since arriving in Tasmania in April last year, he has learned English at the University of Tasmania and has been walking around the states. He has walked from Hobert,up the East Coast, to Lanceston and back thorough the West Coast to Hobert, complete with backpack and wheelbarrow. Mr.Tsuchiya borrowed the unusual backpacking accessory from Tasmania host family when his backpack proved too small. His load includes a tent,an English-Japanese dictionary and a camping stove. Yesterday afternoon, The Mercury caught up with Mr.Tsuchiya on the last leg of his journey around the state, making his way to his host family, the Nelsons, at South Hobert. Uppermost in his mind was some hot takeaway food, including fish and cips, because his camping stove broke down two weeks ago. Thunderstorms which blew his tent down at Christmas, seeing snakes for the first time and native animals stealing his food have all been part of Tasmanian experience for Mr.Tsuchiya.
The 27-year-old student is from Yamanashi prefecture, just outside Tokyo. "I am not exactry sure how far I have travelled but I estimate I was walking about 20Km a day." he said. "I got very tired and had sore feet but I was determined to go on." It's a far cry from Mr.Tsuchiya's life four years ago when he worked at developing computer microchips for OKI Computer Co. "I wanted to go out and explore the world."he said. "Before this, I travelled around South-Esat Asia to China, Thailand and Macau backpaking." On his first leg up the East Coast to Lancestern, Mr.Tsuchiya visited Maria Island. "I only lasted two nights there until I ran out of food and had to come back because of native animals." he said. Mr.Tsuchiya hopes to visit interstate in the time he has left up until April. "But I hope return to Tasmania one day." he said.
