 長い間探していたLPをようやく手に入れました。幸運なことに未開封の新品でした。さすがアメリカは広いなあと感心。探していればいつかは見つかるものですね。
  さて、Henry Mancini が Philadelphia Orchestra Pops を指揮したこのLP、レコードジャケットは Debut! の文字が大きく銘打たれ、Mancini が Academy of Musicで指揮している写真が使われているので、RCAとしてかなり力を入れた企画だと思います。RCA Red Seal が Columbia から Philadelphia Orchestra を獲得した意図の一端がこのような形で現れたのかもしれません。RCA の擁するソリストやアーティストが Philadelphia をバックに沢山レコードを作ってくれることを・・・・。しかし、この第2弾はどうやら無いようです。録音は、1969年,Academy of Musicです。

 解説は Mancini が書いています。Beaver Valley-'37 組曲は、 Mancini のAliquippa,Pennsylvaniaでの10歳代前半の印象であり、"Dream of a lifetime"以下６曲は、世界に誇る "Philadelphia Sound" そして弦・木管・金管・打楽器各セクションをデモンストレーションする意図で作曲したとあります。各曲毎に Solist がクレジットされております。最後に、

 I am deeply grateful to Maestro Ormandy for the opportunity to write and conduct
 this first venture by The Philadelphia Orchestra Pops. My warmest thanks go out
 to all of the artists of the orchestra.

と Ormandy と Orchestraへの感謝が記されています。
  １番好きな曲は、Speedy Gonzales です。1分半程度の短い曲であっと言う間に終わってしまいますが、philadelphia の機能の最も分かりやすいデモンストレーションになっています。なお、この曲のみ "Henry Mancini in the PINK, The Ultimate Collection" でCD化されていますが、CDの方が明らかに音が良いです。正直、LPの方はあまりプレス状態が宜しくなく、強音での雑音・音割れもあり、復刻を期待したい録音です。(2001.10.31)

※CD復刻盤は無いと思っていましたが、1993年に Dolby Surround Sound Series として復刻されていました。Mancini/LSOの録音も収録されたお買い得盤。音も改善されていて聴きやすくなっています。ただ、それでも強音での音割れがあり、これはもともとテープに入っていた音であることも解りました。とはいえ、10年前のCDであり、入手は困難でしょう。(2003.8.12 追記）

  実は私はこの映画一度も見たことは無いのですが、Moon Riverだけは知っていました。ほんとにいい曲ですね。以前、諏訪さんが「オーマンディ掲示板」で「mancini は音に厳く、サントラレコ−ドもフィルムのサウンドトラックからの録音を絶対に許さず、レコ−ド化の時は必ず自ら指揮して自分のバンドかオケをつかって録音してた」とおっしゃっていましたが、このアルバムもその通りで "music from the motion picture score" とあります。 (2001.11.1)
