Philadelphia Orchestra Association による Centennial Celebration bookです。ファン必携の本です。Orchestra Members, World and U.S. Premieres, Discography and Filmography等、最新のデータまで揃っています。ただ、Discography については若干不正確な部分もあるようです。最近はamazon.co.jpで洋書を取り扱うようになりましたので、入手は容易だと思います。(2001.8.27)

Ormandy/Philadelphiaファンなら必ず手元置きたい本です。上記100周年記念本に無い写真も多数掲載されていますし、Discography についてはLP番号が記載されているので、中古LPを探す方にはうってつけの資料だと思います。とはいっても(C)1969 の本ですから、中古で探すしかありません。amazon.com や ebay.com、その他アメリカの古本屋さんを気長に当たれば見つかるかもしれません。（私の場合、amazon.comのオークションで購入しました。売り主は「発送はアメリカ国内のみ」と明記していましたが、「Ormandy/Philadelphiaファンなので売ってもらえないか？」とお願いしたところ快く応じてくれました。）(2001.8.27)

  タイトルの通り、オーケストラのホームグランド（演奏会場）に焦点を当てた本です。最近の本なので、amazon.com等より容易に入手できます。ただ、この本にも Town Hall(別名 Scottish Rite Cathedral、Columbia,RCA時代を通じてのメインの録音場所）についての情報は殆どありません。何故？(2001.8.27)

ormandy 70歳のお祝いの記念本。19人の作曲家より献呈された "Variations on Happy Birthday" の楽譜です。

  Special item...a 62 page, 51 year-old booklet describing the history of
one of America's best-loved orchestras!
  There is a copy of the program from the first performance. Included, too,
are profiles of conductors Scheel, Pohlig, Stokowski, and Ormandy.
Articles on the "Ancestry" and a "Coda" describing the present and hopes
for the future precede "Notes and "Bar-Lines", as well as a list of members
(1900-1950), and a partial list of first performances.
  Add a generous number of photos, some local Philadelphia advertisements
and a full color back page ad from Steinway, and you get the picture!
This oversize book is approx. 12" tall by 9" wide.

  「バッハ、ベートーヴェン、そして官僚主義。フィラデルフィア管弦楽団の場合」という物騒なタイトルの本。フィラデルフィア管弦楽団の運営や Ormandy のコンサートプログラム等についての批判の書。執筆者は元々フィラデルフィア管弦楽団のベーシストとして在籍されていた方。ここら辺の話は後述する「マエストロたちとの対話」でも触れらている。(2001.8.27)

  オリジナルの本はオークションで時折見かけます。日本語版は在庫切れのようで入手は困難のようです。ただ、図書館に置いてある可能性は高いので、借りて読むのが一番安上がり？私も入手しておりません。(2001.8.27)

Orchestra."とあり、こういう本を出版しているのは如何にもアメリカだなあと言う気がします。オーケストラメンバーの家族もレシピ作成に加わっているようです。この本は ebay のオークションで入手。何故かイギリスの女性から入手することになってしまいました。とりあえず、英語が何とか通じればどこの国の人でもやり取り出来るというのは便利というべきかな？(2001.8.27)

  Philadelphia Orchestra を語る上で Stokowski を外す訳にはいきません。といっても彼の本は沢山あり、正直どれが良いのかよく分かりませんが、とりあえずこの本で彼の一生を見通すことは出来ます。(2001.8.27)

  RCA Victor による「管弦楽」入門書。オーケストラの基礎的な知識から楽曲解説まで約650ページもある分厚い本。昔はレコード会社自らこういう啓蒙書を出版して需要を開拓していたということですね。O'connell氏はOrmandyと関係の深い人物。なお、姉妹編に "The Victor Book of the Opera"も有り。(2001.8.27)

  指揮者アンドレ＝プレヴィン監修の本。世界中のオーケストラ奏者による「オーケストラ」のコメントを編纂したもの。philadelphia orchestra の主席オーボエ奏者 John de Lancie のコメントも含まれています。実は、日本語版があるとも知らずこの本を購入してしまいました。やれやれ・・・(2001.10.28)

  ebay のオークションで偶然見かけて入手。60年以上前のプログラムですが状態はまあまあ上等。この当時、RCA Victor が philadelphia Orchestra を専属としてツアーをしてもらうと同時に RCA の製品(radios,phonograph,record player,radio tube)の積極的なPRをしていたことが伺えます。既にNBCの撮影現場のデモの写真も掲載されており、後のテレビ王、David Sarnoff(中央写真左側の人物)の野心が垣間見ることが出来ます。脱線しましたが、Stokowski時代のphiladelphia Orchestraを見ることの出来る、今となっては貴重な資料でしょう。(2001.10.28)

   Very often fans of The Philadelphia Orchestra will ask "Who is the pretty blonde in the violin section"
or "the double trombonist with the mustache"? Being a superb musical ensembles, The Philadelphia Orchestra
plays as one magnificent instrument, yet, of couse, it is made up of 107 individuals.
They all have their audience fans, and it was thought that a closer look, along with thumbnail biographies
of each member, might be of great interest to concertgoers. This is no ego trip for individual members:
it is however, a genuine greeting from the stage in handy reference form. It is to be hoped that these
introductions can became real handshakes and "hellos" on recognition outside the Academy of Music.

   The booklet is based on an idea from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra
and produced by the Philadelphia Orchestra Association.

  ebay のオークションで入手した1975年当時の philadelphia Orchestra のメンバー紹介の小冊子です。stage personnel, librarian まで紹介されています。Very Often... ということですが、やはり気になるひとは気になるのでしょうか？そういえば、Muti も philadelphia に来てから、ご婦人方がその見事な黒髪に興味津々で、使っているシャンプーの銘柄について再三質問を受けたようで、当人はうんざりしていたようですが・・・。(2002.6.4)
