  さて、今も昔もクリスマスレコードはレコード会社のドル箱商品ですが、 ormandy/philadelphia 及び philadelphia Brass は数枚のクリスマスアルバムを制作しており、特にこのColumbiaのレコードは売れに売れたようですね。大オーケストラで奏でられる素晴らしいクリスマス音楽は当時の購買者層を強く引きつけることが出来たのでしょう。
   "In 1963 The Glorious Sound of Christmas went "gold," exceeding a million dollars in sales;
   at that time, it was the fastest selling classical recording in the history of the industry."

とありますから。
  Szell/Cleveland も Columbia の "The Great Songs of Christmas" というアルバムで２曲 "Deck the Hall With Boughs of Holly" "Patapan" という曲を吹き込んでいます。このアルバム、GOODYEAR社の提供によるアルバムみたいですが、演奏者の写真（ポピュラーがほとんど）が時計回りに配置されている中に、ただ一人 Szell の「坊主頭」がぽつんと配置されているという実に微笑ましいジャケットデザインになっております。Karajan も wiener philharmoniker と Price と共にDecca にクリスマスアルバムを吹き込んでいましたね。
  余談はさておき、この Ormandy/Philadelphia のような豪華な組み合わせによるクリスマスアルバムなど現在では恐らく制作不可能でしょう。そういう意味で、これは実に貴重なアルバムです。
  話変わって、以前、着流しさんが Respighi の Trittico Botticelliano「ボティッチェリの3枚の絵」の2曲目のL'adorazione dei Magi「東方の博士達の礼拝」のオリジナルの曲を探しておられるということで、「クラシック招き猫」に質問の投稿をしてみたのですが結局 Response はありませんでした。ただ、Trittico Botticelliano の CD の解説に、
L'adorazione dei Magi looks back to medival church music(the old hymn "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is familiar Theme here)・・・
とあり、L'adorazione dei Magi のテーマの一部分が "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" という曲では繰り返し使われているということを知りました。自分の知っている２つの曲が思いもよらぬ関係にあるというのは面白いことですね。
  話があっちこっちに飛んでしまいましたが、philadelphia sound で奏でられる Christmas Song というのはやっぱりいいですね。さっきの "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" や "Ave Maria" などは美しい弦の音が堪能できます。"Ave Maria" は女性コーラスが入る所まで "Fantasia" そっくりなので、その時の楽譜で演奏しているのかもしれません。ormandy ファンならぜひ手元に置いておきたいクリスマスアルバムだと思います。ちなみに CD ですが、アメリカのTowerかamazon.comかCD Nowで２年くらい前に購入したものなので、今でも入手出来るかもしれません。(2001.9.12 , 2001.12.2)

  "Glorious Sound of Christmas(Columbia MS 6369)"から2年後の ormandy/philadelphia によるクリスマスアルバム第二弾であり、曲の重複はありません。Glorious Sound of・・・はそのアルバム構成のままCD化されていますが、このアルバムについては演奏の約半分がCDされているにとどまります。（後述のCDを参照）Columbia が２匹目のドジョウを狙ったアルバムではありますが、現在ではこんな豪華なアルバムは制作出来ないでしょう。
  St. Francis De Sales Boychoir は地元 philadelphia の教会の少年合唱団と思われますが、ウィーン少年合唱団のようなプロに近い合唱団では無いようで、世界一流のオーケストラと地元の少年合唱団の組み合わせという異色（？）の組み合わせが微笑ましく感じられます。(2002.12.23)

  このCDは２年くらい前にオンラインで購入したものですが、(P)も(C)も記載が無く発売年は不明で、発売もCBS ・ Sony Classical でも無く、Sony Music Special Products となっています。(2002.2.6)

  Mormon Tabernacle Choir と Philadelphia Brass Ensemble によるクリスマスアルバムです。Mormon Tabernacle と philadelphia は米コロムビア時代にかなりの録音を残しています。RCAステレオ時代は皆無ですが・・・
  それはさておき、ブラスアンサンブル・オルガン・パーカッション・合唱という組み合わせはなかなか相性が良いようで、楽しく華やかなクリスマス音楽を楽しむことが出来ます。"The Glorious Sounds of Christmas"の"O Come, O Come, Emmanuel"は合唱無しでしたが、このアルバムは合唱有りです。この曲、レスピーギの３枚のボティッチェリの絵と共に個人的に最近良く聴いています。
  リマスタリングは少々不満ありというところで、強音で音が割れますがヘッドホンで聴かなければそう気にもなりません。このアルバムは「オーマンディ掲示板」で存在を知りオンラインで入手したものです。こういうところは、インターネットさまさまという所でしょうか。本当に便利になったものです。(2002.1.5、2008.6.15修正)

  Philadelphia Brass Ensemble 単独のクリスマスアルバムです。親しみやすい曲を黄金の Brass Ensemble で気楽に楽しめます。演奏は（当然ながら）文句無し！であり、特に Gilbert Johnson の軽やかなトランペットは聴いていて気持ちがいいです。録音年及び Ensemble のメンバー表が無い（上記のMK30077も同様ですが）ので演奏者全員の名前を確定するのは難しいですが、Gilbert Johnsonの他、Seymour Rosenfeld, Mason Jones, Henry C. Smith, Abe Trochinsky といった面々だと思いますが・・・。
  私が所有している philadelphia orchestra,philadelphia brass のクリスマス音楽のColumbia Recordings は以上の４枚で全てです。この他のLP・CDをご存じの方がいらっしゃったらご一報頂けたら幸いです。それにしても、philadelphia は Columbia 時代に結構多くのクリスマスアルバムを制作していますね。
  なお、これら４枚のCDは "This historic recording has been digitally tranferred compact disc to obtain the best possible reproduction from newly remixed original session tapes." とあり、これを信用すればセッション時のテープまで遡って新たにダビング（トラックダウン）しているということであり、かなり注意深くCD化されていると考えて良いでしょう。ただ、（ヘッドホンで聴いた場合）音は少々荒れ気味でありこれはマスターテープの経年劣化によるものと思われます。いずれにせよ、鑑賞には何の支障もありません。再発される可能性はほとんど無いので、見かけたら押さえておきたいCDです。

  Maybe it's the influence of the Salvation Army, or maybe it's just a special kind of inherent affinity.
Whatever the cause, it's a fact that practicaly everyone associates the sound of brass instruments with
the music of Christmas. So, following the success of the Philadelphia Brass Ensemble's debut album,
"The Glorious Sound of Brass," it seemed obvious to us to showcase the Ensemble's sumptuous sonorities
in a program of favorite Christmas carols. Here is the result - a collection of twenty-five carols
played by the first-chair virtuosos of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Nothing more really need be said
- except to wish the listener a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

  RCA移籍後のクリスマスアルバム。RCAのA&R部門のピーター＝マンヴィスの企画によるもの。どちらのアルバムも同じ内容であり、"A CHRISTMAS with EUGENE ORMANDY..."(AGL1-4088) は "A Christmas Spectacular..."(LSC-3326) の再発盤です。
実は、私が持っている "A Christmas Spectacular..."(LSC-3326) は未開封新品（所謂、新古品？）でこのレビューを書くために初めて封を開けたのですが、外周側のそりがひどくて最初の２曲（A/B 両面とも）は針飛びをおこしてまともにかからない状態でした。まあ、３０年以上前のLPですから、こういうこともたまにはありますが・・・。ということで、もう一方の"A CHRISTMAS with EUGENE ORMANDY..."(AGL1-4088)で聴きました。同じ内容なので何の問題も無いのですが・・・・
  それはさておき、このRCA のクリスマスアルバムは Columbia のそれに較べて、伝統的な曲よりもより新しくポピュラーな曲が選択されていますし、録音が新しいこともありますがさらに豊かな音で楽しめます。RCA としてかなり力を入れたアルバムなのでしょう。セールスとして成功したかどうかは分かりませんが・・・。
  Ormandy と William Smith の二人の指揮、そして合唱だけの曲もあります。新しくポピュラー色の強い曲を William Smith が分担して指揮しているようです。個人的には、smith の指揮している曲の方が好みではありますが・・・。"I'll be Home for Christmas" や "The christmas song" など本当に心温まる良い曲ではありませんか。残念ながら、1987年に発売されたCD "Joy to the world"(BMG/RCA GOLD SEAL 6430-2-RG ) では彼の指揮している曲は全く含まれていません。何故でしょう？(2001.12.13,2005.1.15加筆修正)

Fantastic Philadelphians(Weekend Review-Chirstmas Albums)に詳細が説明されており、ようやく私も ormandy/philadelphia のクリスマスアルバムの全貌（少々大げさ）を把握することが出来ました。このアルバムにて、あのアンダーソンの「橇滑り」が登場したわけです。正直、Ichikawaさんが仰るとおりアルバムの体裁は手抜き以外の何物でもありませんが、演奏の充実度は Columbia録音を上回っていますし、Bill Smith が振るポピュラー曲も魅力にあふれています・・・・が、1987年に発売されたCD "Joy to the world"(BMG/RCA GOLD SEAL 6430-2-RG ) では彼の指揮している曲は全く含まれていません。残念なことです(2002.12.23, 2005.1.15加筆修正)

  RCA移籍後の上記クリスマスアルバム二枚を再構成したCDアルバム。ジャケットカバーは第一弾の再発アルバムAGL1-4088とほとんど同じです。 "Total Playing Time 66:05"と長時間収録を謳っているところが時代を感じさせますが・・・・。そして、何故か William Smith 指揮の曲は１つも含まれておりません。タイトルからして、ormandy/philadelphia の演奏のみ選び出したのでしょう。
  それはさておきこのCD、月並みな表現で申しわけありませんが、「ゴージャスなクリスマスミュージック」に満たされたい人にお勧めのアルバム。個人的にアンダーソンの「そり滑り」が特に素晴らしい。12年前のアルバムですが、アメリカのタワーやCD Now等でまだ在庫があるかもしれません。私もそれらのオンラインショッピングでこのCDを入手しました。ちなみに、「そり滑り」は日BMG Funhouse BVCC-38128 "The Fantastic Philadelphians 2"（右側のアルバム）でも聴くことが出来ます。(2002.1.6、2002.12.23追記)

  当時のアメリカを代表する３大オーケストラの奏者が一堂に会した記念碑的な録音であり、Brass Ensemble の素晴らしさを心ゆくまで楽しめます。Masterworks Heritage Series はリマスタリングやアルバム作りに細心の注意を払って制作しているので、音も良く解説は充実しておりお勧めできます。ジャケット写真もネガから起こし直したのか鮮明な写真で、Philadelphia , Cleveland , Chicagoの金管奏者及び ormandy/philadelphia の重要なレコーディング場所であった Town hall(Masonic Temple or Scottish Rite Cahedral、現在は駐車場) のステージもはっきり見ることが出来ます。SACDの国内盤も発売されています（日Sony Classical SRGR-750)が、ジャケット写真はLPからコピーしたのか不鮮明な写真でした。これでは残念ながら中の解説もあんまり期待できそうにないので、SACDに拘らない方はこの

Masterworks Heritage 盤をお勧めします。（確か千円の国内盤もありましたが、これも解説は期待できませんね）
  それにしても、phiadelphia の面々や、Chicago symphony の Adolph Herseth（つい最近まで首席を勤めていた）, Arnold Jacobs , Dale Clevnenger（若い！）, そして後にphiladelphia にやって来るGlenn Dodson(Unitel の映像のあの立派なひげはいつからでしょうか？）、さらにまだ George Szell の治世のCleveland Orchestra のAdelstein , Bloom 等の首席奏者・・・良くこれだけのメンバーを集めたものです。このアルバムを企画したColumbia A&R の Andrew Kazdin（カザンと読むのでしょうか？）もその苦労を下記の通り回想しています。

  The same Probability that governs the chance that ninety toothpicks poured out upon the floor will arranged themselves
into the twenty-six letters of the alphabet applies to the project of bringings together nineteen busy musicians from the
three top orchestras of three states. After extracting a time for recording from a tangle of concert and rehearsal schedules,
personal commitments and the avilability of studio facilities, still such small but insidious questions arose as:
What if someone misses a plane? What if someone gets sick? What if they just don't get along together? What if...?

  ３つの州に点在する３つのオーケストラの19人の金管奏者を一堂に集める、しかも飛び切り忙しい19人を・・・。「・・・それは床にばらまかれた90本の爪楊枝が(たまたま)アルファベット26文字を形作る確率と同じくらい困難な・・・」苦労が忍ばれますね。しかし、天は彼を見放さなかったようです。（日本盤(秋山紀夫氏)のライナーノーツには、「・・・広い床に散らばった90本の爪楊枝をアルファベット順に拾い集めるのと同様に厄介な仕事で、私は26通もの手紙を書かなくてはなりませんでした・・・」とありますが、それは誤訳のようです。Ichikawaさんからご指摘を頂きもう一度辞書を片手に読み直しましたが、確かにIchikawaさんの訳が正しいと思います。ということで、その訳で修正させて頂きました。ご指摘ありがとうございます。）

at home, and you have the recording that testifies to the triumph of tenacity over logistic hurdles.
All of us who in Philadelphia for the recording sessions were witness to a heartwarming display of camaraderie the quickly
dispelled any fears of the existence of professional rivalry. I am certain that we will always remember the association
as an exciting and happy one.

「・・・フィラデルフィアのレコーディングに立ち会った我々全員が（奏者達の）心温まる友情を見て、専門家同志のいがみあいがあるかもしれないという不安などすぐ消えてしまった。・・・」レコーディングは万事うまくいったようです。又、この時のphiladelpha brass ensemble の Abe Torchinsky はこのセッションを下記のとおり回想しています。

  Making this recording was one of the true highlights of my career. Playing under Toscanini and Stokowski - sure, those were
highrights,too  - but it's an unbelievable feeling to sit down with 18 other brass players and do a record like this.
  The recording sessions took place in a Masonic temple that's a parking garege now. It makes me sick to walk by there:
there's a lot of a good sounds coming out of that building. We did the whole thing in three three-hour sessions. The biggest
thrill about making that record was the camaraderie. There was no conductor, but whatever anyone suggested, we tried.
There was no one-upsmanship, no competition between the guys from Cleveland, Philly, and Chicago. We all really got along.

彼のキャリアにおいて、トスカニーニやストコフスキの元で演奏したのとは又違う、"unbelievable feeling " であったと。又、お互い専門家として気持ちの良い共同作業であったことが伺えます。

  After the sessions were over, those of us who were left after Cleveland guys had gone home went down to a bar on 15th Street
called The Brass Rail. We were sitting around having a beer when we realize that we had done the whole record and forgotten
to tune our instruments.

  さて、セッションが終わった後、Philadelphia と Chicago の面々で一杯やっているようですが、どのような話題を肴にしたのか興味深いです。Chicago は音楽監督が Martinon から Solti に交替した時期ですし、Philadelphia もちょうど Columbia から RCA に移籍する時期でしたから。(tune our instruments. が turn our instruments. になっていました。これでは全然意味が伝わりませんね。失礼しました。）

  それにしてもこのアルバム、貴重な写真に混じって奇妙な写真も入っています。左の写真、Torchinsky氏の友人（だそう）ですが、何故か足がありません。（理由は・・・？ともかく、Torchinsky氏はお茶目な方のようです。このアルバムを持っておられる方はこの写真の謎を解いてみてください・・・って少々大げさですね。Sony Classical も冗談がお好き？）一方、グラミー賞受賞時の写真もありますが、この時にはGlenn Dodson氏は Chicago から Philadelphia に移っていますね。（1番右の方は、Tyrone Breuninger であるとIchikawaさんよりご教示頂きました。"Concerto for Camera" にもちゃんとこの写真と名前が記載されておりました。）

  Sony Classical の Essential Classics はこういう掘り出し物をCD化してくれるので見逃せません。Gabrieli 以外のルネッサンスの曲集です。Phialdelphia Brass は相変わらず鳴りっぷりの良いところを聞かせてくれます。親しみやすい曲が多いので気楽に聞けます。Bonelli の曲にはホルンに Nolan Miller そしてトランペットに Donald McComas, Joseph Scannella が加わります。トランペットのこの二人は Lassus の曲にも加わります。
  なお、このCDのブックレットには下記の貴重な写真が掲載されています。このCDでは演奏していませんが、Sam Krauss も写っています。この録音の約8年前の写真です。
