American "Cool" Phrases
Bit off more than you could chew!
When I ride in the U.S., I want to visit a lot of scinic places. That's why I tend to make tight plan. After I rode under the severe sun, I got this expression by an e-mail from my friend, Pat, at a motel. It said, "Bit off more than you could chew" means "plan too ambitious". I realized how foolish I was. 

You all come back here now.
I was caught in a sudden shower. 
I escaped it at a gas station.
After I paid, a lady clerk said to me, " You all ome back here now." 
Its meaning was "come again".

So fresh they ought to be slapped.
Fresh has some meanings.
One of them is Full of Energy.
Other meaning is rude and too confident in a way that shows a lack of respect.

Step right up!
Step right up! Step right up! Ladies and Gentlemen...
This is the typical phrase of circus or this kind of shows.
When I heard this phrase, I was glad.
It reminded me of good old days. 

Buffalo chips
The poop of buffalo. Native American used it as a fuel

Hand and foot
Jeanine was waiting on me hand nad foot.

Burnt to a crisp
Can you see the top of his nose? It got burnt to a crisp.


Breathing down my neck
When I updated my website, she came close to me and tried to find out what today's topic was. She urged me to do it at once. She was breathing down my neck.

I got an e-mail from my American girl friend.
She made me cheer up, when my bike was stolen.
At the end of her e-mail, she added to this sign.

X means kiss.
O means hug.
X means kiss.

Her kindness and considaration made me happy.

American Mt-Blanc
When in Swissland, many Americans thought of this moutain as Mt Blanc itself.   It is not Mt. Blanc. That is why this moutain is called "American Mt Blanc".    

Kick the bucket
Some American friends want to ride in Japan. One of them says " I have always wanted to visit, but never had the opportunity (or the cash!) But someday before I "kick the bucket". "Kick the bucket" means "die".   
This is my first H-D, Softail Classic 2000 with Japanese national flower, Cherry tree. 
Imagine how you can feel when you ride under a flurry of falling cherry blossoms. 
You can see the color of the wind. 
You can feel the verge of love.
 

Would that be killer!
One of my friends knew I rode a Harley in the U.S. and wrote down the articles for magazines. He said to me, " What ajob! I am a photographer and I always wanted to have a job riding around the country taking photos! Would that be killer!"  

Texan Size
We Japanese often say, "It's an American size." when we see something big, compared to Japanese one. American say "Texan Size". Because Texas is so big! For example, this 89cents cup is considered large, "American-size" in Japan.   

Never say die!
In Yellow Stone National Park, the weather was very changable. We had to put on and off a jacket. Bill tried to put it in the bag and lock the key of the bag.  Denise advised him to use her bike bag but he said, 
"Never say die!" 
Finally he succeeded.   

Keep going!
When we walk up to the hill and pass through the other partys, we should say, 
"Hi! Keep going!"  

Northeaster or Nor'easter
In February 17, my friends living in New Hampshire had 3 feet of snow. The weather forcast for that day was for a "Northeaster". It is a form of Blizzard. It's like a hurricane with snow.   

Hall of Fame
When I rode from Chicago to Buffalo, I could find "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."  Near this exit, there is a museum where we can see the history and the glory of famous rock and roll musicians. My heart beat fast.  

Wall of Champions
I went to a high school gym. On the wall, there are many signboards. On each board, a name of club activity and years when the team won the championship. The British are said to love tradition. I felt Americans think highly of establishing tradition.

Dead End
DEAD END means this road is closed at one end. Even if you can follow this road, you can reach nowhere.   

Under Contract
On the top of the century 21 sign board, you can see Under Contract, which means this house belongs to someone soon. Someone will move into this house and live comfortable life. I wish I could buy it. 

Chicken Heart
Chicken heart means not to be brave, afraid to do something. Other expressions are "Chiken-livered" "Yellow belly", "Gultless wonder". In Japanese, we can say, "Flea's heart".  

an Eighteen Wheelers
Americans call this type of truck an "Eighteen Wheelers". Other expressions are "Semi" "Tractor-Trailer" "Big Rig". Can you see how big it is? Can you imagine the wind when they passed my Harley? I think American prosperity is based on these trucks transportations.     

a Squad Car
Americans call a police car "a Squad Car." The meaning of SQUAD is a group who is chosen for a particular type of crime. It sounds stronger than POLICE. I don't want to sit on the car with my hands in handcuffs.  
Squad car is actually a very old name from the '30s. Police cars are more often called "Blace and White", "Patrol Car", "Cherrytop". 

Mid life Crisis 
According to the Oxford dictionary, its meaning is that the feelings of worry, disappointment or lack of confidence that a person may feel in the middle part of their life. In America, some people try to do something young and wild at this period, such as riding Harley, tattoo ... They restore themselves again in order to live an energetic life.

15 Minutes of Fame
This phrase originated with Andy Warhol, abstruct painter in 1969 or 1970.
Its meaning is that everybody will be famous at least once in his/her life.
When my article was on a magazine, my friend, Pat said that to me. 

Alive and Kicking
At supermarket, I found the funny phrase, 
"Alive and Kicking".
Its meaning is "This lobster is fresh enough to kick."
American just boil lobsters with some shells and corns.
Soon, lobsers change their color and look gorgeous.
We dipped the meat into the liquid butter and ate it up.
Its taste was the greatest memory of this trip.

"OUT OF ORDER
means "this telephone doesn't work properly."
We can see a lot of public telephones or vending machines with this notice on.
Who knows when it will be repaired?
I know it wasn't during my visit.

BOOB SHOT!
This is BOOB SHOT! Americans call woman's breast boob. If you have a good luck, they show you them. 
Americans have many names for women's breasts. 'Boob' is just one of them, and is actually used more by women than men, when referring to breasts. Men more often use, tits, rack, hooters, jugs, any many others.

MOONING SHOT!
Americans call man's butt Moon. After we watched BOOB SHOTs, we have to show our butts to ladies in return. This is America! 
Moons- refer to anyone's exposed butt, man or woman. 'Mooning' is typically a college kid stunt, but more playful adults have ben know to 'moon' each other in fun.

CROTCH ROCKET!
This meanings is a type of a motorcycle, a racer replica motocycle, such as NINJYA. Crotch means "the part of the body where the legs join at the top". This phrase seems to come from the riding style of this motorcycle.     

LOL
LOL is a shortened word. Its meaning is "Lots of love". Usually, it is used at the end of the letter and is often used for close family like to your wife, your parents, and Maybe your children. 
For friends, you could say "Sincerely" or "Cheers". 
LOL alson means "Laugh out loud" when some one says it on the internet. 
It could mean either, depending on the context!
LMAO (laugh my ass off ) is another one.

Pick my brain!
Whe I asked some question about the usage of English, one of American friends who is a English teacher (college level English), said to me, "Feel free to pick my brain."
