Eddi Reader: "Simple Soul"
If you look to Eddi Reader for simple songs beautifully sung, with the kind of hypnotic edge that has been sneaking in more and more in recent years, you'll find those things in abundance here. The 11 songs, all but two of which were written or co-written by Boo Hewerdine, who also plays guitar on many of the tracks are flawlessly performed, with melodies that creep into the consciousness and an even more subtle, dreamy soundscape than usual (the feel of Eden even brought to mind the Cocteau Twins). It won't knock your socks off, it'll peel them off very, very slowly and give you a foot massage. Deceptively simple, with plenty of soul. But not Soul. That's something else.
