Eddi Reader: "Candyfloss and Medicine"
This is the silken-voiced, lanky Glaswegian's third solo album
since the demise of Fairground Attraction and the increasing band
of admirers of Reader's ever crystalline tonsils will melt to
this. It's a languid assortment of delicate, jazzy harmonies and
love-torn lyrics penned by Reader herself, producer Teddy Borowiecki
and Bible songwriter Boo Hewerdine. Medicine has a sweet, weepy,
druggy flavour, while Middle Eastern sounds seep into Butterfly
Jar's peek behind the harem curtains and Candyfloss is a creepy,
fuzzy-headed trip. The highlight is Hewerdine's Lazy Heart which,
with lilting bass line alongside Reader's hushed tones, makes
for almost relaxation tape fare.
