東京は、20世紀に2つの大きな災難に見舞われました。
Tokyo
went on to suffer two major catastrophes in the 20th century.
一つは1945年3月10日の「東京大空襲」を含む1944年から1945年までの米軍による空爆です。
One is the
US military airstrike from 1944 to 1945 including “Tōkyō Dai-kūshū 東京大空襲 Tokyo Air Raid”.
そして、もう一つは自然災害である1923年の「関東大地震」で、140,000人が死亡または行方不明になりました。
The
other is “Kantō Dai-sinsai 関東大震災 The Great Kantō Earthquake” of 1923, a natural disaster which left 140,000
people dead or missing.
1923年9月1日土曜日の正午少し前(11:58)に日本の本州にある関東平野を関東大地震が襲いました。
The
Great Kantō Earthquake struck the Kantō Plain on the “Honshū 本州the main Japanese island” shortly before noon (11:58) on Saturday,
September 1, 1923.
この時、揺れが48秒続きましたが、「数分間続いた」と伝えられています。
At this
time, the shaking lasted for 48 seconds, but was reportedly lasting for a few
minutes.
地震の後に広範囲で発生した火災と火災旋風によって多くの死者が出ました。
Extensive
fire, firestorms and even a fire tornado that occurred after the earthquake
added to the death toll.
震央は相模湾から神奈川県西部にある相模トラフです。
The
epicenter is the Sagami Trough in the western part of Kanagawa Prefecture from
“Sagami-wan 相模湾 Bay”.
相模トラフに沿って、北米プレート(オホーツク・プレート)の下にフィリピン海プレートが潜り込んでいます。
Along
the Sagami Trough, the Philippine Sea Plate is subducting beneath the North
American Plate (Okhotsk Plate).
プレートの潜りこみによって溜まった歪みが限界に達し、跳ね上がることで地震が発生しました。
The
strain accumulated due to the submergence of the plate reaches the limit and ruptured
or jumped up, causing an earthquake.
東京は震度6で、マグニチュードは約8と推定されています。
It is
assumed that Tokyo has a seismic intensity of 6 and a magnitude of about 8.
多くの人が火を使って料理をしていた時間に地震が発生したため、直後に多くの火災が発生しました。
Many
fires occurred immediately, because the earthquake happened during the time
many people were cooking with fire.
いくつかの火災は都市をなめ尽す大火災に発展しました。
Some
fires developed into firestorms that swept across cities.
当時、石川県能登半島沖を中心とする強い台風により、東京でも強風が吹き荒れていました。
At that
time, a strong typhoon mainly off the coast of “Noto-hantō 能登半島 Peninsula” in Ishikawa Prefecture was causing strong winds in
Tokyo.
これらの風は火災を急速に拡大させました。
These
winds caused fires to spread rapidly.
多くの人々は、足を溶けたコールタールに取られて死にました。
Many
people died, because their feet became stuck on melting tarmac.
隅田川の東では、人々は「被服廠跡へ」と叫びながら、本所横網町へ押し掛けました。
In the east
of “Sumida-gawa 隅田川 River”, people screamed “Let’s go to
the former site of the Army Clothing Depot” and rushed to “Honjo Yokoami-chō 本所横網町 Town”.
約8万㎡の空地に数万人が箪笥や荷物を持って集まりました。
Tens of
thousands of people gathered with chests and luggage in an open area of about
80,000 m 2.
数時間後、火災旋風が発生し、約38,000人の人々が犠牲になりました。
A few
hours later, a fire tornado struck and killed approximately 38,000 people.
地震により市内全域で水道本管が破壊され、火災は約42時間、9月3日の午前7時頃まで燃え続けました。
Due to
the earthquake, water mains were destroyed throughout the city, and the fire
continued to burn for about 42 hours until around 7:00 am on September 3.
関東地方で570,000戸以上の家が倒壊または焼失し、約100,000人の死者と、約43,000人の行方不明者を出しました。
More
than 570,000 homes have been destroyed or burned down in the Kanto region,
resulting in approximately 100,000 deaths and approximately 43,000 missing
people.
元陸軍被服廠跡の「横網町公園」(約19,000㎡)の中央に1930(昭和5)年に「東京都慰霊堂」が完成しました。
“Tokyo-to
Irei-dō 東京都慰霊堂 Memorial Hall” was completed in
1930 (Showa 5) in the center of “Yokoamichō-Kōen 横網町公園 Park” (about 19,000 m2), which is the former site of the Army Clothing
Dept.
東京都慰霊堂は、遭難者の遺骨を納め、祭祀する霊堂をつくり、震災の記憶を忘れず、再び災害が起こらないことを祈願するために建設されました。
Tokyo-to
Memorial Hall was built to enshrine the ashes of earthquake victims, remember
the event and to pray for safety.
現在、関東大震災で死亡した約58,000人と、米軍の空爆によって都内で死亡した約105,000人の遺骨が納められています。
Currently,
the remains of the approximately 58,000 people who died in the Great Kanto
Earthquake and the approximately 105,000 people who died in Tokyo due to US Army
airstrikes are enshrined.
地震後、東京や横浜で大勢の朝鮮人が殺害されました。
Many “Chōsen-jin
朝鮮人
Koreans” were massacred in Tokyo and Yokohama after the
earthquake.
当時、朝鮮の独立運動に対する恐れから、朝鮮人に対する感情が悪化していました。
At that
time, Anti- Chōsen sentiment was heightened by the fear of the independence
movement in “Chōsen 朝鮮”.
朝鮮人がこの災害を利用して放火や強盗をしているという誤った噂が広まりました。
False
rumors had spread that “Chōsen-jin 朝鮮人” are setting fire
to the houses and committed robbery at this occasion of the disaster.
一部の新聞は、朝鮮人が井戸に毒を入れたという噂を報道しました。
Some
newspapers have reported rumors that “Chōsen-jin 朝鮮人” have poisoned wells.
各地に組織された自警団は、検問所を設け、不審者に発音のテストをしました。
The
vigilantes organized in various places set up a checkpoint to test the
pronunciation of a suspicious person.
「十五円五十銭」の濁音がうまく発音できない者を朝鮮人と判断し、暴行したり、殺害したりしました。
Those
who could not pronounce the sound of “Jūgo-en Goju-sen 十五円五十銭 15.50 yen” well were judged to be “Chōsen-jin 朝鮮人”, and assaulted and killed.
中国語や琉球語、日本の方言などを話す人も、誤って殺されました。
People who
speak Chinese, Ryukyu, and Japanese dialects were also killed by mistake.
軍隊と警察の一部も自警団による殺害に関与したと言われています。
It is
said that some troops and polices are also said to have been involved in the
killings by the vigilante.
また、政情不安を口実にして政治的反体制派も警察と帝国軍によって拉致され、殺害されたと言われています。
Also, it
is said that political dissidents were abducted and killed by the police and
the Imperial Army due to political unrest as an excuse.
内務省は戒厳令を宣言し、秩序と安全の維持を最優先事項とするよう命じました。
The Home
Ministry declared martial law and ordered to make maintenance of order and
security a top priority.
政府の調査では、朝鮮人231名、中国人3名、日本人59名が殺害されたとされています。
According
to a government survey, 231 Koreans, 3 Chinese, and 59 Japanese were killed by
mobs.
しかし、さらに多くの犠牲者が出たと言われています。
However,
it is said that more victims were killed.
