"The Big Chill" 18 x 21 in. Oil

"Still Life & Almanac" 24 x 28.7 in. Oil

'The Big Chill' refers to the time about one month after winter solstice. Japanese sometimes buy red peppers to dry, but often they become a decoration during the winter's colorless season. After the New Year, people hang new amulets in the doorway or on the kitchen wall. I like to paint still life that suggests ordinary life. During composition, besides choosing objects for shape and colors, I unconsciously combine shiny metal and transparent glass; hard, cold feeling material and soft, warm material; inorganic and organic.

"Silver & Japanese Limes" 18 x 15 in. Oil

Old Roses bloom in Japan during the rainy season. Besides that, the climate in my hometown, 3000 feet above sea level, is too severe for them. So as Old Roses are precious, I was given this rare opportunity to paint them. I am charmed by the worn silver set that my American aunt gave to me. Here I combine them with Japanese limes and a train pocket watch. I respect the craftsmen's excellent sense of design and the fine skill shown in this silver and blast carving.
