今世紀初頭のネイティブアメリカンの記録写真家 E. Curtis のギャラリーやシアトルの

ダウンタウン。本場のカフェラッテ。北西海岸部に位置するネイティブアメリカン・

マカー族の居留地、映画「愛と青春の旅立ち」の舞台にもなった趣のある港町、

どこか懐かしさを感じさせる西部劇の町などを訪れます。

そして、メインはMr. ペトログリフ - ビートジェネレーションの旅人、ダニエル・リーンの

ナビゲートによるロックアート探検。緑豊かなワシントン州の大自然をハイキング。

海岸部のペトログリフと山間部のピクトグリフを観察します。

* About the artist:
Daniel Leen was born in Seattle in 1947, and became interested in Northwest
Coast art when, after completing a degree in Anthropology, he moved to
British Columbia in 1975. Spending about 12 years first building, and later
living aboard and sailing a 32' sailboat between southern Puget Sound and
northern British Columbia, he visited many remote village sites, widely
scattered pictograph and petroglyph collections at various museums on the
West Coast. Four summers manning U. S. Forest Service fire lookouts in
wilderness areas also gave him time to develop an attention to detail rare
in modern carvers. Largely self taught in the Northwest Coast style, Leen
has received informal instruction from such well known carvers as Bill Holm,
Bill Reid, and Duane Pasco. The small size of these amulets forces the
artist tot reduce a design to its most basic structure, thus resulting in an
archaic or "primitive" look. Rather than attempting to express his own
personal style of carving, Leen's stated goal is to produce modern amulets
that appear to be "old fashioned and traditional" in the Northwest Coast
style.
