■They are all nuts and a bunch of wimps.（奴らはみんないかれた腰抜け 野郎だ）といったのは沖縄駐留の米軍司令官だ。メールで送った文章がどうし て漏れたのか分からないが、気の緩みがあったことは間違いない。今回の事故 もその類に違いない。

■ヨーロッパの人たちと話すと、たいていの人はアメリカを嫌っている。その 憎しみに時々たじろぐことがある。アメリカ軍の駐留が大きな原因だと思う。 個人的に私はアメリカを嫌いではないし、理解を越えたばかばかしさを秘めて いるあの国に魅力を感じる。ただ、平和時に米軍がどうして日本の国に駐留し なければならないのかという疑問はもっている。こんなこというと、政治的だ と思われ、左とか右とか決め付けられて嫌なのだが、ごく普通の人たち（変な いいかただなあ）が、在日米軍について真剣に考える時なのではないかと思う。
